7oz (Approx 200g) ground beef divided equally into two balls
1 fresh sesame seed bun
2 pieces of deli Cheddar slices (Not processed cheese)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
¼ white onion - roughly chopped
2 tomato slices
5 dill pickle slices
3 pieces of iceberg lettuce - about the size of the bun
Ketchup
Mayonaise
Yellow Mustard

Steps:

  • At 5 Guys they flatten the burger balls by stacking them between pieces of grease proof paper and then pressing them all down with a flat hamburger press. Place one burger ball on top of a piece of grease proof paper and then top with another piece of paper, the other burger ball and another piece of paper. Squash it all down with a hamburger press or spatula.
  • Heat the oil in a large frying pan over high heat.
  • Place your burger patties in the pan along with the chopped onions. Fry the burgers for about two minutes per side, stirring the onions in the meantime so that they fry evenly.
  • Place two pieces of deli style Cheddar cheese on one of the patties.
  • While the cheese melts, build your burger.
  • Make three rings of ketchup and two rings of mustard on the bottom but and spread mayonnaise over the top bun.
  • Cover the bottom bun with the fried onions and then top with the patty with the cheese first and then the patty without cheese.
  • Cover the top bun with the lettuce and then the five pickle slices followed by the two tomato slices.
  • Carefully place the top half over the bottom half and wrap tightly in silver foil to serve.

Enjoy the famous Five Guys burger recipe in the comfort of your own home! This copycat recipe requires just a few ingredients and 20 minutes of your time.

1 lb ground beef (80/20)
2 tbsp butter
1/2 yellow or white onion (sliced)
8 oz mushrooms (sliced)
4 hamburger buns (with sesame seeds)
4 tbsp ketchup
4 tbsp mustard
4 leaves iceberg lettuce
4 slices tomato
16 slices pickles
4 tbsp mayonnaise

Steps:

  • Light a grill over medium heat or heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a drizzle of olive oil. Divide the ground beef into four equal portions. Roll each section into a round shape.
  • Place the ground beef rounds on the grill or in the skillet and press down slightly on each, flattening them. Cook for approximately 5 minutes per side, or until the internal temp reaches 160 degrees F.
  • While the burgers are cooking, melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the onion slices and mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes, or until fragrant and golden brown. Transfer the veggies to a bowl or work surface. Do not clean out the skillet.
  • Place the cut sides of the buns face down in the hot skillet for 1 minute. Transfer to work surface.
  • Assemble each burger: Bottom bun with 1 tbsp each of ketchup and mustard spread on it, 1/4 of the mushroom-onion mixture, burger, 1 lettuce leaf, 1 tomato slice, 4 pickle slices, top bun with 1 tbsp mayo spread on it.

Five Guys is delicious but if you want to make it at home, you need a copycat burger recipe. Here it is.

80/20 chuck, about ¼ pound
90/10 sirloin, about ¼ pound
2 sesame seed buns
4 slices Kraft American cheese, deli style

Steps:

  • Mix even proportions of chuck and sirloin. Make 4 meatballs, weighing 3.3 ounces each. Flatten balls between nonstick parchment paper.
  • On different grills, simultaneously start cooking burgers on medium-high and toasting buns on medium-low. At 30 seconds in, flip and flatten burgers.
  • When buns are lightly toasted, remove from heat. Coat top bun with generous helping of hot sauce and mayo. Coat bottom bun with 3 rings of ketchup and 2 rings of mustard.
  • About 2 minutes after the first flip, flip burgers again and flatten to your liking. Flip again 2 minutes later, flattening again.
  • Top each patty with 1 slice cheese. Put 2 patties together cheese to cheese, and place stack between buns.
  • Wrap burger in aluminum foil. Keep wrapped for at least 1 minute, then unwrap and enjoy.
