MOM'S FRUIT SALAD

Mom's Fruit Salad image

This is a really simple fruit salad spotlighting more citrusy flavors. The sauce is really thin and the perfect balance of sweetness with a touch of savoriness. Even though it is really thin, it still coats the fruit and leaves a nice flavor. We loved the combination of fruits - not one fruit overpowers another. The sauce does...

MOM'S MISTAKE FRUIT SALAD

Mom's Mistake Fruit Salad image

My Mom had no mother growing up, to teach her to cook. So,being a new wife & mother herself, she ask someone how to make fruit salad & they told her, "Just like you do potato salad", meaning a bunch of cut up stuff & then a sauce on it. She took it literally, I guess, so, she cut up the fruit & put a potato salad sauce on it....

Provided by Peggi Anne Tebben

Categories     Other Salads

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 oranges, peeled with a knife (no white pith on them) & cut up
1 can(s) fruit coctail ,drained or canned peaches or pears will work, just whatever you have handy.
1 1/2 c red or green seedless grapes ( i use red for color)
1 1/2 c fresh (if possible) or canned (drained) pineapple chunks, cut up
2 apples cored & cut up (leave skin on)
4 large bananas, sliced up ( you can never get too much bananas in it)
2/3 c chopped pecans
THE DRESSING:
1 c real mayonnaise or miracle whip salad dressing
1 1/2 Tbsp prepared mustard
2 - 3 dash(es) worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp salt

Steps:

  • 1. Cut up fruits into large bowl, in order given, so they don't brown on you.
  • 2. In another smaller bowl, mix the dressing ingredients. Pour on fruits & toss to mix. May need more or less dressing. I never measure things. Put alot of dressing on it though. Refrigerate at least 3 hours before serving.
  • 3. Right before serving, add the chopped pecans. You can either mix in or just garnish the top with them or both. If you put them in too early, they soften up & if you have any leftovers for the next day, they won't be crunchy.
  • 4. Note: I usually serve this with the meal. That's when I eat it. You could also just serve it as a dessert though.

OVERNIGHT FRUIT SALAD

Overnight Fruit Salad image

I first tasted this rich, old-fashioned fruit salad at my wedding reception many years ago. The ladies who did the cooking wouldn't share the recipe at the time, but I eventually got it. I've made it for many meals, and our daughters copied the recipe when they married. -Eileen Duffeck, Lena, Wisconsin

  • Honeydew, Jicama, and Mango Salad. Don’t worry about removing all of the melon seeds in this take on the popular Mexican street snack—they’re edible and add a little crunch.
  • Watermelon, Endive, and Fig Salad. Perfect as either a side salad or a cocktail hour snack platter, you’re going to want to keep serving this mix of complementary sweet and salty and crunchy and soft bites all summer long.
  • Tomato and Mango Salad in Aguachile. Aguachile is the spicy relative of ceviche that leans heavily on chiles for heat and lime juice for acidity. Here, hearts of palm, mango, and tomatoes replace the traditional raw shrimp.
  • Honeydew Salad with Ginger Dressing and Peanuts. Just the side your barbecue ribs are looking for, this all-green salad gets a kick from serrano, ginger, and just a hint of fish sauce.
  • Tomato-Watermelon Salad with Turmeric Oil. Red, juicy, and sweet, tomatoes and watermelon are soul mates, and they both need salt, spice, and fat to reach their full potential.
  • Cantaloupe with Sugar Snap Peas and Ricotta Salata. Salty and sweet, crunchy and juicy, this throw-it-together summer side has it all. View Recipe.
  • Watermelon with Lime Dressing and Peanuts. The jagged, irregular chunks of fruit in this salad recipe make it clear that something unexpected is about to happen.
  • Honeydew and Fennel Salad with Basil. If you have a perfectly ripe melon—great! If you don’t, no worries. The salt, acid, and a bit of heat here will give life to lackluster specimens.
  • Peaches and Tomatoes with Burrata and Hot Sauce. Peaches with a zippy hot sauce-honey dressing and creamy burrata cheese. View Recipe.
  • Mango and Cucumber Chow. Green mangoes would be ideal, but slightly unripe mangoes are an imperfect but successful substitute. View Recipe.
