OLD FASHION COFFEE CAKE- LOS ANGELES CITY SCHOOLS

Old Fashion Coffee Cake- Los Angeles City Schools image

When I was a kid, the Los Angeles City Schools use to make this. It was so good. I often skip breakfast just so I could have a slice of this at recess. Now luckly years later, Irene Polh moved down the street from us when we lived on our mountain so many years ago. Irene use to work in the school cafeteria and she had the recipe. I have cut the recipe in half for you. I can't tell you how many times I have made this for large gatherings. It's always a hit.

Categories     Other Breakfast

Number Of Ingredients 11

4 cup(s) flour
2 3/4 cup(s) light brown sugar, dark will do too
2 cup(s) granulated sugar
2 teaspoon(s) salt
2 teaspoon(s) nutmeg
1 1/2 cup(s) canola oil
2 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
2 teaspoon(s) baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) baking powder
4 - large eggs
1 pint(s) buttermilk

Steps:

  • I loved living in our mountain community. We did so many things as a service to our community. Mary my best friend (more like a big sister and at times like a Mom) and neighbor who lived across the street from me, was active in the Historical Society while I was active in the School District. Mary use to have a very large garage sale every year to help raise money for the Historical Society. They always received donations of items to sell, especially mismatched coffee mugs. Poor Mary kept wrapping the mugs, packing, boxing and putting the mugs in storage for the next year with hopes of selling some. When Mary had a couple hundred mugs I came up with the idea of how to get rid of them. First we wash them all the night before in my dishwasher then put the mugs on trays and covered them with towels to keep them clean. I got out the catering service's coffee pot and told Mary to make coffee while I made cinnamon rolls and this wonderful Coffee cake. We put up a sign saying, "Buy a mug for BUCK and get a free cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll or a piece of coffee cake." She sold out of coffee mugs the first day. Problem solved and Mary never had a problem with left over mismatched coffee mugs again. Through out the years both Mary and I laughed over the Mug situation. Unfortunately Mary died recently and there is no one left to laugh and share the memory with. I wish we had taken pictures. Some lovely person donated hundreds of precut pieces of quilt to the historical society. Mary and spent a winter and spring sew each piece by hand together. It was raffled off and my Ex won it. I had it for many years until my divorce, then I gave it to Mary and now her grandaughter owns it. First bowl: Combine first 6 ingredients in a mixer at low speed. Mix until crumbly. Divide half the mixture. Set aside half of the mixture in a second bowl and add the cinnamon, to use as topping and for the middle of the cake.
  • Combine the last 4 ingredients to the first bowl. Mix and blend, but don't over mix.
  • Pour half the dough (batter) into greased pan or pans. Sprinkle half the topping, pour the rest of the dough (batter) on top and then add the last of the topping.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 375* 25 to 30 mintues or until done (cake test).
  • I have very large pans, trays, and racks left over from the catering service years Irene and I had so many years ago when we lived on our mountain. You are probably going to want to cut this down even more.
