Challah French Toast Casserole Recipe image

Fix our easy challah French toast the night before and bake it the next morning while getting dressed. It's a delicious way to start the day!

Provided by Cheryl Najafi

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 8

8 eggs (beaten)
1 cup half-and-half
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp fine sea salt
1 loaf challah bread (torn into large pieces (approx. 5-6 cups))
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar (firmly packed)

Steps:

  • Combine eggs, half and half, vanilla, cinnamon and salt in large mixing bowl. Add challah bread pieces, gently stirring to coat bread with egg mixture. Pour into a lightly greased 10" square pan and set aside.
  • Melt butter and brown sugar in a small sauce pan over medium heat until combined with a smooth texture, about 5-7 minutes. Pour evenly over bread then wrap tightly with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator overnight.
  • Remove casserole from refrigerator, uncover and allow to rest for about 10 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees then bake for about 30-35 minutes until eggs are set and it's hot and bubbly (place aluminum foil on top if bread browns to quickly). Enjoy!

BAKED CHALLAH FRENCH TOAST

Baked Challah French Toast image

Provided by Molly Yeh

Time 7h

Yield 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

6 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup whole milk
2/3 cup part-skim or whole-milk ricotta
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
6 large eggs
1 lemon, zested and juiced
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
12 thick-sliced (3/4- to 1-inch) day-old challah bread slices
1 cup frozen blueberries
Powdered sugar, for serving

Steps:

  • Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg in a small bowl and mix to combine. Set aside. In a large bowl, add the milk, ricotta, vanilla, salt, eggs and lemon zest. Whisk to combine and set aside. Pour the melted butter in a 9-by-13-inch casserole dish. Dip each slice of bread lightly in the egg mixture and shingle the bread in the casserole dish, sprinkling a large pinch of the sugar mixture on each layer. Pour the remaining egg mixture on top of the bread and then pour the remaining sugar mixture on top. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 6 hours and up to overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Bake the casserole for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake until the custard is set and the bread is golden brown, an additional 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, add the blueberries and lemon juice to a small saucepot. Cook over medium heat until the berries burst and thicken and the sauce begins to bubble, about 15 minutes.
  • When ready to serve, spoon the blueberries over the center of the casserole and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

CHALLAH FRENCH TOAST CASSEROLE

Challah French Toast Casserole image

Challah French toast casserole is a decadent recipe that's perfect for a weekend brunch. You prep this baked challah French toast the night before. So in the morning, brunch will be ready easily.

Provided by The Worktop

Categories     Breakfast     Brunch     Toasts and Sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 pound challah bread (- cubed into 1-inch pieces)
8 large eggs
3 cups whole milk
1/3 cup light brown sugar (- lightly packed)
2 teaspoons quality vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
3 tablespoons unsalted butter (- melted)
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Lightly oil a 9x13 baking pan.
  • Arrange the challah bread pieces evenly across the baking pan. I like to arrange it so you can see a mixture of the glossy tops of the challah bread and the cut sides of the bread.
  • In a large bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and salt.
  • Gently pour the egg mixture over the challah bread pieces, covering all the pieces. The tops of some of the bread cubes might not be fully covered in the egg mixture immediately. But those bread cubes should be soaked through after you let the casserole sit for a bit.
  • Cover and refrigerate. Allow the French toast casserole to sit for at least 2 hours, but it can soak overnight.
  • When you are ready to bake it, preheat the oven to 350°F / 176°C. Make sure all the challah bread cubes have been soaked with the egg mixture. If any of the bread cubes are still not soaked, gently push them down a bit into the casserole.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Pour the melted butter evenly across the surface of the French toast casserole. Evenly sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture across the top.
  • Bake in the oven for about 50-60 minutes. To check if the French toast casserole is done, you can insert a knife in the middle and see if the casserole is set. If the casserole is browning too quickly, place it in a lower rack in the oven, or cover it with aluminum foil.
  • Allow the casserole to sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.
  • To serve, I like to drizzle maple syrup across the entire casserole. Alternatively, you could also sprinkle powdered sugar across the top.

OVERNIGHT FRENCH TOAST

Overnight French Toast image

If you have a crowd for breakfast, overnight French toast is a winning idea. Instead of standing over the stove, cooking slice after slice, it bakes in the oven and emerges puffed and golden and ready for a big glug of maple syrup. Try making it with a stale loaf that you forgot to eat amid all the other holiday goodies. A fat brioche, fruit-filled panettone or a braided challah all work well. Stay away from croissants, though: Their chewy interiors are best enjoyed fresh.

Categories     breakfast, breads, custards and puddings, main course

Time 1h

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, plus more for baking dish
1 pound enriched bread, such as brioche, challah or panettone sliced 3/4-inch thick
1/4 cup golden raisins (optional)
6 large eggs
2 1/2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of freshly ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/3 cup pecans, chopped (optional)
Confectioners' sugar for dusting (optional)
Maple syrup, for serving

Steps:

  • Butter a 2-quart baking dish. Butter the front sides of the slices of bread and shingle the slices upright in the dish, overlapping as necessary. Nestle the raisins evenly between the slices of bread but not on top.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and salt until well combined. Pour the milk mixture over the bread and press the bread gently to absorb. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  • Heat oven to 350 degrees. Remove the plastic wrap. Sprinkle the pecans evenly over the top. Bake until puffed, golden and set in the center, 50 to 60 minutes. While baking, if the top begins to get too dark, tent with foil. Let stand 10 minutes. Dust with confectioners' sugar and serve with maple syrup.
