Green Peas Pulao Recipe or Indian Rice and Peas is an easy one pot rice made with fresh or frozen green peas, whole spices and aromatic basmati rice. Step-by-step Recipe Instructions to cook Peas Pulao on Stove Top Pressure Cooker and Instant Pot. Easy weeknight dinner best served with Raita, Dal or curry.

1 cup Basmati Rice
½ cup Green Peas (use fresh or frozen)
1 Onion (medium size, finely chopped)
1 tbsp Ghee or Clarified Butter
½ tsp Cumin Seeds
2 Bay Leaf or Tej Patta
2 Green Cardamom or Chhoti Eliachi
1 Black Cardamom or Badi Eliachi
Dalchini or Cinnamon Sticks (1 inch piece of cinnamon x 4 nos.)
Salt to taste
1 ¼ cup Water

Steps:

  • Wash and soak 1 cup of Basmati Rice for 15 - 20 mins. Ensure you rinse the rice until the water runs clear and discard the water used for soaking.
  • Heat a pan, add ghee, cumin, whole spices (cardamom, cinnamon and bay leaves).
  • Once the spices are roasted, add onions and sauté until translucent.
  • To this add green peas and soaked + drained Basmati Rice. Mix well and switch off the flame.
  • Transfer this to a pressure cooker safe vessel, add water and salt. Mix well, cover and pressure cook on high for 3 whistles.
  • Allow the pressure to release naturally before opening the cooker and fluffing the rice.

  • Switch on the Instant Pot, Press Sauté Mode. Once its hot, add ghee or clarified butter, cumin and whole spices.
  • Once the spices and cumin have roasted, add green peas and Basmati rice (soaked and drained). Switch off Sauté Mode.
  • Mix well and add water.
  • Cover the Instant Pot Lid, Turn the vent to sealing and pressure cook on Low for 6 minutes followed by 10 mins of NPR. Press Cancel.
  • Release the balance pressure manually, Open the lid and fluff the rice using fork.

Peas Pulao or Matar Pulao recipe is a quick, filling, one pot, flavorful rice dish made with green peas, onions and whole spices in an Instant Pot Pressure Cooker or Stovetop.

2 tablespoons oil (or ghee)
1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
2-3 green chilies (slit lengthwise)
2 tablespoon mint (pudina leaves)
1 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)
1 cup basmati rice
1/5 cups water
salt (to taste)
1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
2 cardamom
1 bay leaf
2-3 cloves
1 inch cinnamon
1 star anise (optional)

Steps:

  • Press SAUTE on Instant Pot. Heat oil (or ghee), add in the whole spices like cumin seeds, bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves, star anise and cardamom. Saute for a few secs or till aromatic.
  • Next add onion, ginger-garlic paste, and green chillies. Saute till the onions are soft and light brown.
  • Then add in the mint leaves, green peas and saute for few seconds.
  • Then add rinsed basmati rice, water, and salt. Mix everything well.
  • Close the lid securely, and turn the vent to "SEALING". Select the PRESSURE COOK/MANUAL (High Pressure) setting and set the cooking time to 5 minutes.
  • When the instant pot beeps, do a quick pressure release before removing the lid.
  • Gently fluff up the rice with a ladle or fork. Instant Pot Peas pulao or Matar Pulao recipe is ready, serve with yogurt, raita, or any curry.

  • Close the lid and put the whistle weight on. Cook for 1 whistle on medium flame and let the pressure release naturally.
  • Open the lid and gently fluff up the rice. Peas pulao is ready, serve with yogurt, or raita.
  • To make peas pulao on a stovetop pot, follow the steps as the instant pot recipe until adding water and then cook covered on low heat until the water is absorbed and then turn off the heat. Allow it to rest for some time, and then open the lid and fluff the rice.
