I found this recipe somewhere (100 years ago) and it has been a success at all family and neighborhood gatherings. Some nibble it with tortilla chips, and others just grab a bowl and spoon. This is best made a day ahead to allow flavors to blend

1/4 lb ground beef
1 hot Italian sausage, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 (14 ounce) can diced tomatoes, liquid included
1 small green pepper, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 (16 ounce) can pinto beans
1/2 cup green olives, chopped
1/3 cup raisins
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
tortilla chips

Steps:

  • Fry ground beef and sausage until done, Drain fat except 1 tbs.
  • Add onion, tomato, green pepper and garlic and saute until onion is golden. Transfer to pot, add beans, olives, raisins and spices.
  • Cover and simmer low about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

1 (10 ounce) can tomato and green chile mix
8 ounces mushrooms (chopped)
6 ounces black olives (chopped)
1/4 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon garlic
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • In a skillet, brown meat and drain.
  • Add onion and sautee until tender.
  • In a casserole dish melt cheese, add tomato and chile mix.
  • Add ground beef mixture, mushrooms, olives, and spices.
  • Mix together and heat through.
  • Serve with chips.

6 tomatoes
¾ cup water
¼ onion, halved
1 clove garlic
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
½ onion, chopped
1 serrano pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tomato, chopped
2 pounds lean ground beef
1 (7.75 ounce) can Mexican-style hot tomato sauce (such as El Pato®)
3 potatoes, peeled and cubed
3 medium carrots, peeled and cubed
1 jalapeno pepper, sliced
2 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules
½ tablespoon ground cumin
1 bay leaf
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Bring 6 whole tomatoes to a boil in a small pot. Transfer to a blender. Add 3/4 cup water, onion halves, and whole garlic clove. Blend until smooth.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped onion and serrano pepper. Cook until onion is transparent. Add minced garlic; cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add chopped tomato and cook for 1 minute more. Add ground beef; cook until browned, about 8 minutes.
  • Pour canned tomato sauce into the beef mixture. Cook for 2 minutes. Mix in potatoes and carrots. Cook for 2 minutes; add the blended tomatoes, jalapeno, chicken bouillon, cumin, and bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well, reduce heat, and simmer until most of the liquid is absorbed, about 20 minutes. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

2 (1.41 ounce) packages sazon seasoning (such as Goya®)
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon white sugar
salt to taste

Steps:

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat; cook and stir garlic, onion, and green bell pepper in the hot oil until softened, 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Crumble ground beef into the skillet; cook and stir until browned completely, 7 to 10 minutes.

1 lb lean ground beef
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 -3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup diced onion
1 cup diced red bell pepper
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
1 (28 ounce) can tomatoes, chopped and juice reserved
5 tablespoons capers
5 tablespoons currants
3 tablespoons cider vinegar
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 cup chopped Italian parsley
1/4 cup chopped cilantro
salt & freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat; drain beef in a collander and set aside.
  • Add oil to the skillet; over medium heat saute the garlic, onion, red bell peppers and jalapeno peppers until the onion is translucent.
  • Add the cooked ground beef back to the skillet along with the chopped tomatoes and juice, capers, currants, vinegar, brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, cinnamon, oregano, and cloves.
  • Bring to a boil; lower heat and simmer, uncovered for 30 minutes.
  • Should have the consistency of a thick chili.
  • Add in the parsley and cilantro; simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.
