Hot buttered rum is a popular winter drink. This warm, buttery cocktail is easy to make for one person or to scale up for a house full of guests.

2 teaspoons ​brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter (soft)
1 splash vanilla extract
1 dash ​​ground cinnamon
1 dash ​ground nutmeg
1 dash ​ground allspice
2 ounces ​​ rum (dark)
4 ounces water (hot)

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Place the sugar, butter, vanilla extract, and spices into the bottom of an Irish coffee glass or mug and mix well or muddle .
  • Pour in the rum and top it with hot water.
  • Stir and garnish with a cinnamon stick. Serve and enjoy.

1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 cup whipping cream, unwhipped
2 cups icing sugar
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
rum
boiling water

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until fluffy.
  • Beat in cream and icing sugar until smooth.
  • Stir in spices.
  • Chill for 30 minutes to firm up. Scoop out 2 tablespoons worth and roll into balls. Place in freezer to firm up before placing in a freezer container.
  • To serve:
  • Place rum, boiling water and a buttered rum ball in a mug. Stir and enjoy!

8 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
½ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
⅛ teaspoon ground cardamom
1 pinch ground cloves
1 pinch salt
6 tablespoons heavy cream
1 ⅛ cups dark rum
4 ½ cups boiling water, or as needed
⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg, or to taste

Steps:

  • Place butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, and salt for batter into a mixing bowl and cream together with a spatula until well combined.
  • To make the drink, place about 2 tablespoons of the batter into a festive, heat-proof mug. Add 1 tablespoon cream, 3 tablespoons rum, and fill halfway up with some of the boiling water. Stir with a spoon until the batter dissolves and top off more water. Garnish with a pinch of nutmeg. Repeat until all 6 drinks are prepared and serve immediately.

This is the real thing, an authentic old-fashioned recipe except you use a slow cooker to simmer it. You will swear you are drinking a cinnamon roll, and then it hits you! Very tasty and a family favorite.

2 cups brown sugar
½ cup butter
1 pinch salt
2 quarts hot water
3 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
2 cups rum
1 cup sweetened whipped cream
ground nutmeg to taste

Steps:

  • Combine the brown sugar, butter, salt and hot water in 5 quart slow cooker. Add cinnamon sticks and cloves. Cover and cook on Low for 5 hours. Stir in rum.
  • Ladle from the slow cooker into mugs, and top with whipped cream and a dusting of nutmeg.

2 or 3 ounces dark rum
Twist lemon peel
Stick cinnamon
2 cloves
Sweet cider or water
1 tablespoon sweet butter
Nutmeg

Steps:

  • Put the rum, lemon peel, cinnamon and cloves in a pewter tankard or any heavy 12-ounce mug that has been rinsed in very hot water to warm it. Heat the cider or water to the boiling point and pour into the spiced rum. Add the pat of butter and stir well. Grate a little nutmeg on top. A cube of sugar may be added as well.
