HOMEMADE TAHINI - SESAME PASTE



Homemade Tahini - Sesame Paste image

If you have ever wanted to learn how to make tahini, now is your chance. It is incredibly easy to prepare involving just two ingredients, sesame seeds and olive oil.

1 cup unhulled sesame seeds
2 tbsp - 1/2 cup olive oil

Steps:

  • Place the sesame seeds in a dry pan and toast on low heat for 10 minutes. Stir often or shake the pan and watch carefully - they don't need much color. Let the seeds cool after toasting.
  • Add the cooled toasted sesame seeds and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a food processor and process until smooth. Scrape down the sides as needed and add more olive oil for desired consistency.
  • Store homemade tahini refrigerated.

2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup tepid water

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Place the sesame seeds in a blender or food processor and grind until smooth.
  • Add the sesame oil and salt. Process until combined.
  • With the motor running, add the tepid water in a very slow, steady stream and blend until smooth.
  • Use in recipes or serve on its own.
  • Enjoy.

I have always loved making hummus for my family (which usually includes tahini). When I discovered my son was allergic to soy (which is in most all store-bought tahini), I decided to make my own and it turned out even better than any other store-bought brand! Made as described this recipe is Paleo-diet friendly, soy free, dairy free, gluten free, and grain free. Enjoy!

1 cup sesame seeds
¼ cup olive oil, or as needed

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Spread sesame seeds onto a baking sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until seeds are fragrant, stirring every few minutes, 10 to 12 minutes.
  • Transfer toasted seeds to a blender and add olive oil. Blend until completely smooth, adding additional oil if needed. Refrigerate in a sealed container.
