Shrimp Fra Diavolo Pizza image

The famous "Shrimp Fra Diavolo" ingredients...in a pizza! Spicy, fresh, and full of flavor!

Provided by Ali

Time 32m

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 medium pizza dough, homemade or storebought (I used Pizza Dan's recipe
1/4 cup (4 Tbsp.) olive oil, divided
1 lb. large uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined
pinch of salt and black pepper
5 cloves garlic, minced
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 cup dry white or red wine
2 cups grape tomatoes, halved
1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 tsp. dried oregano
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped
grated Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven (and baking stone if using) to 425 degrees F.
  • Heat 1 Tbsp. oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season shrimp with salt and pepper, then add to the skillet. Saute for one minute, then flip shrimp and saute until the shrimp is just seared on both sides. Remove and transfer shrimp to a separate plate.
  • Add an additional 2 Tbsp. oil to the skillet. Add onions and saute for another 5 minutes, or until translucent. Add garlic and saute for one minute. Add wine, and deglaze pan for one minute. Then add tomatoes, crushed red pepper, and oregano. Reduce heat to medium-low, and let simmer and reduce for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Meanwhile, brush or mist the top of the pizza crust with the remaining 1 Tbsp. oil. Sprinkle about half of the mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the pizza, leaving a 1-inch border. Then evenly spread the tomato mixture on top of the cheese. Add the shrimp in an even layer, and then cover with the remaining mozzarella.
  • Bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until dough has risen and cheese is melted. Remove and garnish with chopped fresh basil and Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately.

3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
1/2 serrano chile, seeded and finely minced
1/4 cup limoncello or sambuca
1/4 cup white wine
2 cups crushed San Marzano tomatoes
1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
1 tablespoon fresh parsley leaves, finely minced
1 teaspoon fresh basil leaves, finely minced

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 pound large shrimp, peeled, deveined
1 teaspoon salt, plus additional as needed
1 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper flakes
3 tablespoons olive oil, plus 1 to 2 tablespoons
1 medium onion, sliced
1 (14 1/2-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 cup dry white wine
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
3 tablespoon chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves
3 tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves

Steps:

  • Toss the shrimp in a medium bowl with 1 teaspoon of salt and red pepper flakes. Heat the 3 tablespoons oil in a heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion to the same skillet, adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of olive oil to the pan, if necessary, and saute until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes with their juices, wine, garlic, and oregano. Simmer until the sauce thickens slightly, about 10 minutes. Return the shrimp and any accumulated juices to the tomato mixture; toss to coat, and cook for about a minute so the flavors meld together. Stir in the parsley and basil. CHEF JOHN'S SHRIMP FRA DIAVOLO

Chef John's Shrimp Fra Diavolo image

This recipe features the devilishly delicious shrimp fra diavolo, or 'shrimp brother devil' if we are being literal for comic effect. It's really good and turns any pile of pasta or rice into a memorable meal. Some people like to add a little lemon, but I don't think it needs it unless your wine is too sweet.

Provided by Chef John

Categories     World Cuisine Recipes     European     Italian

Time 35m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 pound extra large shrimp (16-20), peeled and deveined, tail left on
2 tablespoons olive oil, or more as needed
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 pinch Aleppo pepper flakes, or to taste
½ yellow onion, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
½ teaspoon dried oregano
1 cup white wine
1 ½ cups canned crushed tomatoes (such as San Marzano)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil leaves

Steps:

  • Combine shrimp, olive oil, red pepper flakes, salt, and Aleppo pepper flakes in a bowl; toss to coat shrimp completely in oil and spices.
  • Heat a large skillet over high heat until very hot. Cook shrimp in a single layer until browned on one side, about 2 minutes. Turn shrimp and cook until browned on the other side, about 1 minute more. Transfer shrimp to a bowl.
  • Heat the same skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir onion with a pinch of salt in hot skillet until onions are slightly golden and just becoming translucent; 2 to 4 minutes. Add garlic and oregano to onion; cook and stir until fragrant, 15 to 30 seconds.
  • Pour white wine into onions and bring to a boil while scraping the browned bits of food off of the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon; add crushed tomatoes and lower heat to medium-low. Cook and stir until tomato mixture thickens and flavors blend, 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Return shrimp to skillet along with any accumulated juices in the bowl. Cook until shrimp are reheated, 2 to 4 minutes. Stir parsley and basil into sauce and season with salt, red pepper flakes, and Aleppo pepper flakes.
