Superb French Salad Dressing image

A tasty French salad dressing that never separates! This dressing won a prize. It keeps well for weeks in the refrigerator. And what a great hostess gift in a pretty glass jar with a label and the recipe handwritten on an index or recipe card. Add the dressing to a basket with some salad ingredients if you like. Add a few daisies, or other flowers from your garden to the basket for a nice presentation, just before leaving. Dampen the ends of the flower stems with cool water and wrap them in foil before placing them in the basket.

1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup white vinegar or 1/2 cup seasoned rice vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1 small onion, quartered
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
1/4 teaspoon paprika
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4-1/2 teaspoon dried basil (optional)

Steps:

  • Blend all ingredients in a blender or food processor for about 30 seconds until thoroughly mixed.
  • Place in sterilized jars.
  • Label and date.

This dressing will have you licking your plates clean, it's that good and better than any bottled! this is best if made a few hours ahead to blend the flavors or make a day ahead --- for creamy French dressing add in the mayonnaise and for creamy blue cheese French dressing add in 1/4 cup or more of crumbled blue cheese --- all amounts may be adjusted to taste

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup ketchup
1/2-3/4 cup sugar (start with 1/2 cup)
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/3 cup minced yellow onion
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2-1 teaspoon garlic salt (or to taste or use 1-2 teaspoons fresh minced garlic and 1/2 teaspoon white salt)
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper (optional or to taste)
2 -3 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional, add in only for a creamy-style French dressing)

Steps:

  • In a large food processor blend all ingredients together until smooth (starting with 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt and 1/2 cup sugar and add in more to taste after mixing.
  • Do not attempt to make this in a small 4-cup blender or you will have the dressing all over your counter!
  • Mix in the mayonnaise (if using) for a creamy-style French dressing.
  • Place in the fridge for a couple of hours before serving.

1/2 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Steps:

  • Put all of the liquid ingredients in a blender, then put the dry ingredients into the blender.
  • Blend on high speed for 30 seconds.
  • Pour into a bottle and chill.
  • Makes 2 3/4 cups of delicious dressing!
  • This is a loose adaptation of a recipe from the New Hampshire Maple Producers Association.
