WHOLE WHEAT BEER BREAD



Whole Wheat Beer Bread image

Good with soups, chili. Makes excellent toast. Flavor of bread will change, depending on type of beer used. Loaf comes out looking textured on top.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
4 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 ½ teaspoons salt
⅓ cup packed brown sugar
1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle beer

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking powder, salt and brown sugar. Pour in beer, stir until a stiff batter is formed. It may be necessary to mix dough with your hands. Scrape dough into prepared loaf pan.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 3/8 cups water
1 1/2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons molasses
1 teaspoon salt (book calls for 1 1/2 tsp but we thought it was a bit salty)
2 cups bread flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Steps:

  • Measure and add liquid ingredients to bread pan.
  • Measure and add dry ingredients (except yeast) to bread pan.
  • Use finger to form well in the flour and put the yeast in it. Making sure yeast doesn't come in contact with any liquid.
  • Put pan in maker and close lid. Choose "whole wheat" setting and crust color. Press start.

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Pour in the beer and fold to combine. The dough/batter will be lumpy but very moist.
  • Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking pan and bake for one hour or until golden and cooked through. The bread should shrink away from the sides of the pan. Remove to a rack to cool. Serve with butter.
