You'll see how these are unique if you read the instructions! A recipe by Mary Burghardt from the "From the Governor's Pantry" cookbook, Lind House Association in New Ulm, Minnesota, July 1988. The book is dedicated to the many volunteers who had donated their time, talents and money to restore the John Lind home.

Ingredients

3/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2 egg yolks
2 cups sifted flour
4 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
6 ounces chocolate chips
2 egg whites
3/4 cup brown sugar

Steps:

Combine shortening, 1/2 cup brown sugar, white sugar, egg yolks, flour, water, vanilla, and baking soda.
Pat into 9 x 13 inch pan.
Spread chocolate chips over it.
Beat egg white until stiff.
Gradually add 3/4 cup brown sugar.
Spread over chips.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

VANILLA BROWNIES

These unique brownies are a nice surprise from the usual chocolate brownie. If you love cake and brownies as much as I do, you will love this wonderful recipe.

Ingredients

10 ounces vanilla chips
1/2 cup margarine or 1/2 cup butter
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
3 tablespoons butter, soft
1 -2 tablespoon milk or 1 -2 tablespoon water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

Preheat oven to 350 (F).
Line 13x9x2 inch rectangular pan with foil, or grease and flour.
Heat vanilla chips and margarine over low heat, stirring frequently, just until melted.
Remove from heat; cool.
Stir in remaining ingredients.
Spread batter in pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Cool completely.
Prepare Vanilla Glaze:.
Mix all ingredients until smooth.
Spread on cooled brownies.
YUM!
