I'm a from-scratch cook but also like shortcuts. Since we love French toast and waffles, I use a waffle iron to make a hybrid French toast. -Linda Martindale, Elkhorn, WI

8 large eggs
2 cups 2% milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
16 slices Texas toast
Maple syrup

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, whisk the first 6 ingredients until blended. Dip both sides of bread in egg mixture. Place in a preheated waffle iron; bake until golden brown, 4-5 minutes. If desired, cut waffles into thirds. Serve with syrup. Freeze option: Cool waffles on wire racks. Freeze between layers of waxed paper in freezer containers. Reheat frozen waffles in a toaster on medium setting.

1 cup milk
3/4 cup maple-flavored or pancake syrup, divided
8 slices challah bread, 1 inch thick
1/2 cup PHILADELPHIA Brown Sugar & Cinnamon Cream Cheese Spread
2 bananas
1/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted

Steps:

  • Heat waffle iron.
  • Whisk eggs, milk and 1/4 cup syrup in pie plate until blended.
  • Spray waffle iron with cooking spray. Dip 1 bread slice in egg mixture, turning to evenly moisten both sides of bread. Shake gently over pie plate to allow excess egg mixture to drip off.
  • Add bread to hot waffle iron; close lid, gently pressing on lid handle to flatten bread slightly. Cook 3 to 4 min. or until golden brown. Repeat with remaining bread slices.
  • Meanwhile, microwave remaining syrup in large microwaveable measuring cup on HIGH 30 sec. or just until warmed. Gradually whisk in cream cheese spread until melted. Microwave 30 sec. to 1 min. or until sauce is smooth and creamy, whisking every 15 sec. (Do not let sauce come to boil.)
  • Slice bananas; spoon over waffles. Top with cream cheese sauce and nuts.

1 1/2 cups milk
3 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Pinch salt
5 large eggs
Four 1 1/2-inch-thick slices brioche or challah bread
Melted unsalted butter, for brushing waffle iron
Maple syrup, raspberries and confectioners' sugar, for topping
Special equipment: waffle iron (preferably Belgian style)

Steps:

  • Preheat a waffle iron to medium-high. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees F (to keep cooked waffles warm). Whisk together the milk, sugar, vanilla, salt and eggs in a bowl or baking dish. Soak a piece of bread in the mixture for 2 minutes per side.
  • Lightly brush the top and bottom of the waffle iron with butter. Place the soaked bread on the waffle iron and close gently (don't push down). Cook until golden brown and dry underneath when you lift a corner, 5 to 6 minutes. Keep the warm in the oven or covered with foil on a plate. Repeat with the remaining bread.
  • Top the French toast with syrup, raspberries and confectioners' sugar.

  • Preheat a waffle iron according to manufacturer's instructions and spray with cooking spray.
  • Whisk milk, eggs, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and salt together in a wide bowl until thoroughly combined. Dip bread slices 1 at a time in the egg mixture, coating both sides completely. Lift bread with a slotted spatula to allow excess egg mixture to drain back into the bowl. Place dipped bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet and let rest until mixture soaks in, about 2 minutes.
  • Place dipped bread in the preheated waffle iron. Gently close the lid without forcing it down. Cook according to manufacturer's instructions until golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Repeat with remaining slices.

  • Cut six ¾"-thick slices Texas toast, Pullman, or other white sandwich bread in half on a diagonal. (Alternatively, if you are in a time crunch, bake in a 275° oven until bread is dry to the touch but has not taken on any color, about 30 minutes.)
  • Preheat oven to 275°. Whisk 6 large eggs, ½ cup heavy cream, ¼ cup sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, ½ tsp. Diamond Crystal or ¼ tsp. Morton kosher salt, ½ tsp. ground cinnamon, and ¼ tsp. freshly grated nutmeg in a large bowl to combine. Remove rack with bread from baking sheet and pour in egg mixture. Add 2 pieces of soaked bread (4 if your iron will allow), close, and cook until steam dissipates and waffles are golden brown, about 4 minutes. Open iron and transfer waffles to a clean rimmed baking sheet; keep warm in the oven while you cook the remaining waffles.
  • Combine ½ cup pure maple syrup and ¼ tsp. kosher salt in a small heatproof bowl. Melt ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter in the same small microwave-safe bowl in a microwave on medium power, in 20-second intervals (or in a small saucepan over medium heat). Gradually pour butter into syrup, whisking constantly until completely incorporated. If mixture does not come together or is too thick (it should look like a light, thin caramel sauce), warm slightly by placing bowl on the warm waffle iron or briefly in the oven, then whisk again.
