WATERMELON FRUIT BOWL

Watermelon Fruit Bowl image

All of your favorite fruits, lightly sweetened, served in a watermelon 'bowl'.

Provided by CINDY N.

Categories     Appetizers and Snacks     Fruit

Time 50m

Yield 20

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 large watermelon
1 cantaloupe, halved and seeded
1 honeydew melon, halved and seeded
2 (15 ounce) cans mandarin oranges, drained
2 (20 ounce) cans pineapple chunks, drained
2 cups halved fresh strawberries
2 cups seedless grapes
½ cup water
¼ cup white sugar
2 tablespoons grated lemon zest

Steps:

  • With a large, sharp knife, remove the top 1/4 section of the watermelon. With a melon baller, scoop flesh from inside of watermelon, removing as many seeds as possible. Leave 1/2 inch of flesh inside the shell of the watermelon. Scoop cantaloupe and honeydew in the same manner, removing as much flesh as possible, and discarding the rinds. Refrigerate fruits separately until ready to assemble.
  • In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, bring water and sugar to a boil. Remove from heat, and continue stirring until sugar has completely dissolved. Add lemon zest, and set aside to cool.
  • To serve, place watermelon balls, cantaloupe, honeydew, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, and grapes, in a large mixing bowl. Pour syrup over, and toss thoroughly. Transfer mixture to watermelon bowl, and serve. Set aside any fruit mixture that will not fit. There will be enough fruit to refill the bowl.

WATERMELON FRUIT BOWL RECIPE

Watermelon fruit bowl recipe image

This fun fruit bowl and fruit kebabs are easy to make together with the kids and perfect for hot summer days...

Provided by Anneliese Giggins

Categories     Dessert

Time 10m

Yield Makes: 1

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/2 large watermelon
2 apples
2 kiwi fruit, skin removed
Handful of grapes
50g strawberries, hulled
50g cherries, stones removed

Steps:

  • First of all make sure your watermelon is ripe. The flesh of the watermelon should have a little give when you press it with your thumb.
  • Slicing the watermelon in half is definitely a job for a grown up. My little boy watched in awe as I 'sawed' the very large fruit in half. It was quite hard work cutting the watermelon in half, so make sure you use a sharp knife.
  • You only need half of your watermelon. Place the other half in the fridge for another day or perhaps use it to make a thirst-quenching drink or even watermelon ice lollies.
  • The next part is so much fun for children. Pass your child a spoon and ask them to help scoop out the pink flesh from the half of the watermelon you are using for your fruit bowl. My son stuffed his face with watermelon as he worked - it was a good job there was so much of it!
  • Move the watermelon pieces to a chopping board, then your helper can use a blunt table knife to slice it up into small wedges. They can then move on to the kiwi fruit and strawberries.
  • While your child is busy slicing you can use a sharp knife to chop any harder fruit, such as the apples.
  • Once all the fruit is prepared, your helper can simply pile all of the fruit back into the bowl. They can do this in layers or mix all the fruit up - they can be as creative as they wish.
  • The finished watermelon looks rather elegant but, to make it a little more fun and appealing to children, you can make 'fruit kebabs' by pushing skewers/kebab sticks down into the watermelon and then pushing more fruit down the sticks for an explosion of fruit!

SHARK AND WAVES GIANT WATERMELON BOWL

Shark and Waves Giant Watermelon Bowl image

Fruit salad is a staple at summer parties. We kicked ours up a notch by serving it in a giant watermelon "wave bowl" to make it the centerpiece of any shindig. Watch your fingers-- there may be a shark or two lurking in those shoals!

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 30m

Yield 12 to 14 servings

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 seedless watermelons (each about 10 pounds)
4 pints blueberries
4 pints blackberries
2 cups red seedless grapes

Steps:

  • Using a large chef's knife, cut both watermelons in half lengthwise through the stem. With a melon half flesh side up, cut vertical lines into the flesh (leaving rind intact) 1 inch apart and about 2 inches deep along the length of each half, leaving a 1-inch border of flesh on both ends. Repeat this process with the lines going in the opposite direction. Use a spoon to scoop out the watermelon pieces into a large bowl (it's okay if some of the spears break in half as you are doing this.) Repeat with the remaining melon halves. Use the spoon to remove as much of the flesh left in the watermelon halves as possible and save for another use.
  • Cut 1 1/2 inches off both ends of 2 of the watermelon halves (these halves will become the middle parts of the bowl). Cut 1 1/2 inches off one end of the 2 remaining halves (these will become the bookends of your bowl). Use the flesh left in the watermelon ends to stamp out sharks with a 3-inch shark cookie cutter and set aside.
  • Use a metal skewer to outline waves along the top edge of each watermelon half. Then carefully cut out the wave pattern using a sharp paring knife. Take one middle piece and one bookend piece and place the flat sides together to create half of the large bowl. Thread the metal skewer through the bottom of the watermelons to secure them together. Repeat this process with the remaining watermelon halves and another metal skewer to create the other half of the large bowl. Place both halves on a large platter with the two middle pieces pushed together (these parts do not need to be secured with a skewer as they will stay together on the platter).
  • Fill the assembled watermelon bowl with the reserved watermelon chunks. Mix the berries and grapes together and scatter on top of the watermelon, covering it as much as possible, then add the melon sharks.

WATERMELON PIG

Watermelon Pig image

This cute little guy is the best way to serve fruit at a party. Oink, oink!

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     dessert

Time 1h5m

Yield 8 to 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

One 18- to 20-pound seedless watermelon
4 raisins
2 pints raspberries
2 plums, sliced
2 peaches, sliced
2 tablespoons honey
Juice of 1 lemon

Steps:

  • Set the watermelon on its side (stem end facing left or right) and cut off a small flat piece of rind from the bottom so the watermelon is stable.
  • Use masking tape to mark off a 6-by-7-inch rectangle on top of the watermelon (with 7 inches running along the length of the watermelon and 6 inches running along the width), slightly off center and a little toward one end of the watermelon (which will be the rear end of the pig). Use the tape as a guide to cut out the top of the watermelon. Reserve the cut piece. Scoop out 4 cups of watermelon balls using a melon baller. Remove the remaining watermelon flesh and save for another use.
  • To make the nose: Remove most but not all of the flesh from the reserved piece (there should still be pink showing). Use a 2-inch round cutter to cut a nose piece out of the very center. Trim away any ragged flesh to make a flat pink nose. Cut 2 small spaces in the center with a paring knife and press a raisin into each for nostrils. Cut a thin slice from the front of the watermelon to make a flat space for the nose. Attach the nose with 2 toothpicks.
  • To make the feet: Cut the reserved piece of rind in half, right through the space used to make the nose. There will be an arch on each piece, where the nose was cut out. Cut each of these pieces in half, about 1/2 inch above the arch (reserve the pieces without the arch). Cut off the rind from both sides of the arch on each piece, slanting in toward the arch to make 4 feet total. Put the feet under the sides of the pig so they're cradling his belly.
  • To make the ears: From the remaining pieces, cut 2 triangles for ears, following the curve of the rind so the ears flop naturally. Attach the ears with toothpicks to the top of the watermelon on either side of the cavity, with the pink side facing forward.
  • To make the eyes: Use an apple corer to cut 2 rounds from the remaining scraps. Slice off the pink flesh to create 2 small white circles. Carve a space in the center of each circle (but don't go all the way through) and press a raisin in each for eyes. Attach the eyes with toothpicks.
  • To make the tail: Use a paring knife to cut a thin strip of green rind 2 to 3 inches long and about 1/4 inch wide. Twirl the piece tightly about the handle of a spoon or a pen and secure with a rubber band to allow the tail to curl; let sit about 15 minutes.
  • Toss the watermelon balls, raspberries, plums and peaches in a large bowl. Add the honey and lemon juice and toss well to coat. Spoon the fruit into the pig. Carve a small niche in the back of the pig that will fit the tail. Unwrap the curly tail and insert it into the space. Refrigerate the pig until ready to serve.
