WHOLE GRAIN HOT CEREAL

Whole Grain Hot Cereal image

This is a hearty whole-grain breakfast that I created for my 5 year old, who requested "porridge" a la Wallace and Gromit.

Provided by rach1031

Categories     Breakfast

Time 30m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/4 cup cornmeal
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup cracked wheat
1/2 cup barley
5 cups water
1/8 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Bring 5 cups of water to rolling boil, add salt. Pour in barley, cover and reduce to a simmer. Allow to cook about 5 minutes. Wisk in cornmeal, then stir in remaining grains. Cover pan again, turn heat to down to bare minimum to keep pan warm and allow grains to cook thoroughly. Stir regularly to keep cereal from sticking and burning. Treat almost as if you are making rice (it's a similar process). Remove from heat and allow to sit for a few minutes. Cereal will be very thick. Add more water at start if you like a creamier cereal. Serve with milk, honey, cinnamon and dried fruit. I make a big batch and parcel it out for the week.

FIVE GRAIN HOT CEREAL

Five Grain Hot Cereal image

I love whole grain cereals! This is a hearty and healthy way to start the morning. I got this off the internet and changed it a bit.

Provided by Sharon123

Categories     Breakfast

Time 20m

Yield 3 1/4 cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup dry oatmeal
1/2 cup quick-cooking barley
1/2 cup dry brown rice
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup sesame seeds (optional)

Steps:

  • You need a blender(or food processor, or better yet, a coffee grinder) to make this recipe.
  • Get out your coffee grinder.
  • Measure the dry oatmeal into it.
  • Whirl the oatmeal until it is powdery, like flour.
  • Dump the oatmeal into a mixing bowl.
  • Measure the barley into the blender.
  • Process it until powdery.
  • Dump it into the bowl with the oatmeal.
  • Measure the brown rice into the blender.
  • Process it until powdery.
  • The rice will take longer processing than the oatmeal or barley.
  • It will be a tiny bit coarser after blending too, that is alright.
  • When it is as powdery as you can get it, dump it into the bowl with the other grains.
  • Add the whole wheat flour and the cornmeal, along with the sesame seeds, is using.
  • Stir the mixture up to combine it thoroughly.
  • Transfer the mixture to a resealable container and label.
  • Store on the pantry shelf.
  • Makes 3 1/4 cups.
  • To Cook: 1/3 cup 5 Grain Cereal, 1 cup cold tap water, Dash Salt, and 2 tablespoons brown sugar(or 1 tbls. honey).
  • In a small saucepan combine the cereal and cold water.
  • You use cold water because it prevents lumps.
  • Add the salt and brown sugar.
  • Bring to a boil over high heat.
  • Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer for about 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Serve with milk.
  • Makes 1 serving.
  • To make 4 servings, use 1 cup of 5 Grain Cereal, 3 cups of cold tap water, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/3 cup brown sugar.
  • This is a very healthy and hearty way to start the morning.
  • I like this cereal much better than most other mixed grain cereals I have tried.
  • The rice gives the cooked cereal a nice chewy texture which contrasts nicely with the smoothness of the whole wheat flour and cornmeal.
  • If you don't have quick barley, you can replace it with more oatmeal, or even wheat germ, or wheat bran.
  • I've also thought that Rye Flour might make a nice addition, although I have never tried it.
  • This cereal is an excellent source of B vitamins and fiber.

  • Overnight Oats With Strawberries and Almonds. Busy morning ahead? This whole-grain breakfast can be prepped the night before, so you can grab something healthy the next morning and head out on your way.
  • Nutty Superfood Breakfast Bites. This on-the-go whole-grain breakfast packs a nutritional punch with a slew of superfoods, including almonds, goji berries, quinoa, blueberries—and even a drizzle of dark chocolate if you're feeling indulgent.
  • Quinoa Breakfast Bowl. Prefer a savory start to your day? This one's for you. Though more often seen at the dinner table, crunchy, nutty quinoa can be an unexpected but appealing addition to the breakfast table, too.
  • Whole-Grain Banana Muffins. A combo of whole wheat flour and omega-3 rich flax meal gives these muffins their tender crumb, while ripe bananas, almonds, and vanilla add just the right balance of crunch and sweetness.
  • Oatmeal With Cheddar and Scallion. A sprinkling of shredded cheddar, paprika, and a flurry of chopped scallions elevate this savory oatmeal from the ordinary to the inspired.
  • Easy Granola. Do-it-yourself granola may sound like a project, but it couldn't be simpler—or more delicious. (Trust us: try it and you'll never crave the store-bought stuff again.)
  • Toasted Pistachio Muesli With Apple and Fig. Can't get enough breakfast cereal? Even cereal junkies need to add something new the rotation now and then. Spice, sweetness, and irresistible crunch—this muesli has it all.
  • Whole-Grain Blueberry Muffins. Plump blueberries, oats, and whole-wheat flour deliver lots of fiber—meaning, with one of these in hand, you're sure to stay full through your morning meetings.
  • Granola Bars With Apricots, Oats, and Almonds. Skip the sugar-packed "breakfast bars" in the supermarket aisle and start your day with this healthier version instead.
  • Oatmeal With Pineapple and Mint. Does your porridge need a pick me up? Though untraditional, adding bright, acidic pineapple and refreshing mint to your oatmeal lends the dish just enough zing to get your senses going in the morning.
