Micheladas with Tajin image

Micheladas came from the words 'mi chela helada' which translates into 'my cold beer'. Micheladas originated in Mexico and now there are many different recipes. Dark beer, normally XX Cerveza is the norm in Mexico, but you can use any beer you like. This is a basic recipe with optional add-ons. With or without them, Micheladas are delicious. Garnish with a tamarind candy straw and additional lime wedges.

1 lime, juiced
1 teaspoon chile-lime seasoning (such as Tajin®), or more to taste
ice
½ cup tomato juice cocktail (such as Clamato®), chilled
1 tablespoon chamoy (Mexican chili fruit condiment)
1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (such as Tapatio®)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon soy sauce
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle dark beer (such as Dos Equis XX Cerveza)

Steps:

  • Rub lime juice around the rim of a glass and dip in chile-lime seasoning. Fill with ice.
  • Combine tomato juice cocktail, chamoy, hot sauce, Worcestershire, soy sauce, and cayenne. Mix well and pour over ice. Fill the glass with beer.

A refreshing way to enjoy a beer, a chelada (also called michelada) is a popular drink in Mexico. There are many variations but it often features a lager with a hefty dose of lime juice served in a glass with a salted rim. To spice things up a bit, we dip the rim of the glass in Tajín (a chile-lime seasoning) to give each sip a tangy bite, and add a little ice to the glass to keep things nice and cold.

1 teaspoon chile-lime seasoning, such as Tajín
1 lime
Ice
1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle lager beer

Steps:

  • Spread chile-lime seasoning on a small plate. Cut 1 wedge from lime; squeeze juice from the remainder of the lime. Rub the lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip into the seasoning. Add ice to the glass; pour in beer and top with the lime juice.

Learn to make a classic Mexican beer cocktail with tomato juice, hot sauce, and lime juice that you can sip all day long at the beach.

Coarse salt
2 lime wedges
2 ounces tomato juice (canned, bottled, or fresh)
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1/2 ounce hot sauce
1/4 ounce Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon Tajín Clásico
1 bottle (12 ounces) pale lager, such as Corona Extra, chilled

Steps:

  • Place about 1/4 cup salt on a small plate. Rub the rim of a Collins or pint glass (or a 16-ounce Solo cup-no need to get fancy) with one of the lime wedges to moisten it, then dip the rim in the salt to coat.
  • Combine the tomato juice, lime juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Tajín, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl and mix.
  • Fill the prepared glass about three-quarters full with ice cubes and add the tomato juice mixture. Top with beer and garnish with the remaining lime wedge.
