GEORGE WASHINGTON CHERRY SALAD



George Washington Cherry Salad image

This recipe is from the Cherry Marketing Institute. Since I love jello salads and I love cherries, it was absolutely made for me.

1 (6 ounce) package cherry gelatin
1 (20 ounce) can cherry pie filling
1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1 cup sour cream
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup chopped pecans or 1/4 cup walnuts

Steps:

  • In large mixing bowl, mix gelatin with 2 cups boiling water until dissoved.
  • Add cherry pie filling and pineapple with juice. Mix well.
  • Pour into 13X9X2 inch pan and refrigerate until gelatin is set.
  • Mix cream cheese, sour cream and sugar until smooth.
  • Spread over salad after gelatin is set.
  • Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  • Sprinkle with nuts just before serving.

1 can(s) cherry pie filling, can use lite
1 package(s) large sugar free cherry jello
2 cup(s) boiling water
1 cup(s) cold water
1 cup(s) sour cream (lite sour cream ok)

Steps:

  • Dissolve jello in boiling water in large bowl. Add cherry pie filling & stir to mix. Add cold water & stir.
  • Ladle jello liquid into 9x9 pyrex casserole (approximately 1/2 inch in depth) & refrigerate till congealed. Spread sour cream evenly over congealed jello. Gently ladle remaining jello mixture over sour cream. Refrigerate. Cut in squares to serve.

1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons honey
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 large apples (about 1 pound), cubed
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 celery ribs, chopped
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted
1 cup fresh or frozen pitted tart cherries, thawed

Steps:

  • For dressing, whisk together first 4 ingredients. In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice. Add celery, cranberries and almonds; toss with dressing. Gently stir in cherries., Refrigerate, covered, 1 hour before serving.

FREDA'S CHERRY SUPREME SALAD

This was my grandmother Freda's 'famous' cherry salad. It was a huge hit at family gatherings. My mom mixes the lemon Jello, lemon juice, cream cheese and mayo in the blender. But here's the original recipe. Enjoy!

1 (3 ounce) package strawberry flavored Jell-O® mix
1 cup boiling water
1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling
1 (3 ounce) package lemon flavored Jell-O® mix
¾ cup boiling water
¼ cup lemon juice
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese
⅓ cup mayonnaise
1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple, undrained
2 cups miniature marshmallows
½ cup whipped cream
½ cup chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • Dissolve the strawberry gelatin in 1 cup of boiling water. Stir in the cherry pie filling, then spread the mixture into a 7x11 inch pan, and refrigerate until nearly set, about 45 minutes.
  • Dissolve the lemon gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water; stir in the lemon juice, and set aside. Mash the cream cheese in a separate bowl until soft, then stir in the mayonnaise. Pour the lemon gelatin into the cream cheese mixture and stir until smooth. Next, stir in the undrained pineapple. Finally, fold in the marshmallows and whipped cream. Spread the pineapple mixture over the chilled cherry layer, and sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Chill in the refrigerator until fully set, about 2 hours.

1 (11 ounce) can mandarin oranges
1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple
2 cups miniature marshmallows

1/4 teaspoon salt
red food coloring

Steps:

  • Drain all fruits and add a few drops red food coloring to color.
  • In mixer, whip cream cheese until fluffy.
  • Add sour cream, sugar, salt, food coloring.
  • Fold fruits into cream cheese mixture with nuts and marshmallows.
  • Pour into Pyrex sprayed with Pam, cover with foil and freeze overnight.
  • Cut into squares 30 minutes before serving.

Steps:

  • In large bowl combine gelatin and hot water.
  • Stir well till gelatin dissolves.
  • Add the pineapple, do not drain, and cherry pie filling.Pour into 8x10 glass dish.
  • Chill until set.
  • Soften the cream cheese and mix well with the sugar.
  • Blend in the sour cream and vanilla extract.
  • Spread over gelatin mixture.
  • Sprinkle with nuts.

2 teaspoons sherry vinegar or aged red-wine vinegar
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
6 ounces fresh sour cherries, rinsed, drained, pitted, and halved or quartered (1 cup)
1 fennel bulb, halved length-wise, cored, and thinly sliced, plus 1/2 cup fronds
2 cups mixed fresh tender-herb leaves, such as shiso, basil, tarragon, anise hyssop, and mint
5 cups mixed greens, such as watercress, amaranth, tatsoi, and arugula
2 spring onions, thinly sliced (1/2 cup)
6 radishes, thinly sliced (1 cup)

Steps:

  • Stir together vinegar, lemon juice, a large pinch of salt, and a few grinds of pepper. Whisk in oil. Stir in cherries; let stand at least 5 minutes and up to 30 minutes.
  • Finely chop fennel fronds; mix with herbs. Toss greens with herb mixture. Gently mix in onions, radishes, and sliced fennel; add dressing and cherries, tossing to combine. Season with salt and pepper and serve immediately.
