CHRISTMAS TREE "FOOD"

Christmas Tree

DO NOT DRINK THIS OR CONSUME IT IN ANY WAY - this is a mixture used to water your Christmas tree to keep it fresh throughout the season. If you have pets or small children who may get into the mixture at the bottom of the tree, do not use the bleach. I leave it out because I have a cat who gets into the water at the bottom of the tree. The vinegar helps the tree to take in more of the water, the corn syrup acts as an energy source for the tree, and the bleach helps to prevent mold and fungi from growing in the water or on the base of the tree. The copper in the penny acts as a fungicide and an acidifier. The Food.com computer will let me put bleach in as an ingredient (weird), but it won't let me put "a penny" in as an ingredient, so just know that "1 penny" should be listed in the ingredients list. This mixture also helps to keep cut flowers fresh.

Provided by xtine

Categories     Low Protein

Time 5m

Yield 1 gallon

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 gallon water
4 teaspoons white vinegar
2 cups light corn syrup or 1 cup sugar
4 teaspoons bleach (optional)

Steps:

  • DISCLAIMER: This should go without saying, but - DO NOT DRINK THIS. THIS MIXTURE IS NOT MEANT TO BE CONSUMED BY HUMANS OR ANIMALS. IT SHOULD ONLY BE USED TO WATER YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE.
  • IMPORTANT: DO NOT MIX VINEGAR AND BLEACH TOGETHER DIRECTLY - IF YOU MIX THEM DIRECTLY THE MIXTURE WILL PRODUCE TOXIC VAPORS. MIX THE VINEGAR WITH THE WATER FIRST, THEN PROCEED WITH THE REST OF THE RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the water and the vinegar.
  • Add the corn syrup or the sugar, and stir well until all is combined or the sugar is dissolved. If you are using sugar, it may help to use half hot water first to dissolve the sugar, then add the second half, using cold water.
  • Add the bleach, if using, and mix well to combine.
  • Place your Christmas tree securely in the Christmas tree stand.
  • Place a penny in the reservoir of the Christmas tree stand, then fill it with the water mixture.
  • Store the remainder of the mixture in a gallon jug, and check the tree every day to see if it needs more of the mixture. Christmas trees which are not watered and which dry out become fire hazards, so make sure your tree is kept watered. If you have used bleach in the mixture label the container appropriately so that no one will drink from it.

CHEESE AND CRACKERS CHRISTMAS TREE

Cheese and Crackers Christmas Tree image

Add extra flair to your holiday spread with this impressive cheese-and-cracker Christmas tree that's actually very easy to make. Serve it with extra crackers on the side.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     appetizer

Time 1h

Yield 8 to 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 13

Two 8-ounce blocks cream cheese, at room temperature
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
5 cups shredded white Cheddar (about 16 ounces)
Kosher salt
1 pretzel rod
1/3 cup finely chopped fresh parsley, plus more for dusting
1/2 cup pretzel sticks (about 40 pieces)
1/2 cup mini buttery crackers (about 45 pieces)
1/4 cup sliced almonds
2 tablespoons pomegranate seeds
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
Crackers, for serving

Steps:

  • Put the cream cheese, Worcestershire sauce, lemon zest, shredded Cheddar and 1 teaspoon salt in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and mix until thoroughly combined, scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula as needed.
  • Mound about 1/4 cup of the cheese mixture on a serving plate and insert the pretzel rod vertically (the pretzel will help to hold up the structure). Add more of the cheese mixture, forming it around the pretzel rod and into a cone shape about 6 inches wide and 10 inches tall.
  • Press the chopped parsley into the surface of the cheese tree to make it green, making sure to cover all the white areas. Chill in the refrigerator until firm, about 30 minutes.
  • Insert the pretzel sticks, mini butter crackers and almonds all over the tree, angled downward to create "branches". Take care to alternate the ingredients to add variety and depth. As you decorate the top, break the pretzel sticks in half so they are proportional to the size of the tree. Top the tree with one sliced almond for the "star". Tuck the pomegranate seeds in between the branches for festive "lights". Dust the edges with more finely chopped fresh parsley and grated Parmesan "snow". Serve with crackers on the side.

CHRISTMAS TREE GARLIC BREAD

Christmas tree garlic bread image

Each piece of this pull-apart bread has a melted mozarella centre. Brushed with garlic butter and served with a tomato dipping sauce, this will be a hit at any Christmas party buffet table

Provided by Cassie Best

Categories     Buffet, Side dish

Time 1h40m

Number Of Ingredients 16

500g strong white bread flour
7g sachet fast-action dried yeast
2 tsp golden caster sugar
100g butter , melted (buy a 250g pack and use the rest in the garlic butter)
drizzle of oil , for greasing
2 tbsp fine polenta or cornmeal
150g pack mozzarella (about 20 balls)
small knob of butter
1 garlic clove , crushed
2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tbsp red wine vinegar
2 tsp golden caster sugar
140g butter
4 garlic cloves , crushed
small bunch parsley , finely chopped (leave a little leftover to garnish, if you like)

Steps:

  • Tip the flour into a large bowl or the bowl of a freestanding mixer. Add the yeast and sugar to one side of the bowl and 1 tsp fine salt to the other. Mix together, then add the melted butter and 275ml warm water. Mix to a dough, then knead for 10 mins by hand (or 5 mins in a freestanding mixer) until the dough feels stretchy and soft. Clean out the bowl, then lightly grease with a little oil. Turn the dough over in the oiled bowl until it's well coated. Cover with cling film or a tea towel and set aside somewhere warm until the dough has doubled in size. Alternatively, put the dough in the fridge and leave to rise slowly for 2 days (bring it to room temperature before continuing to step 2).
  • Line your largest baking sheet with parchment, and dust with polenta or cornmeal. Drain the mozzarella and dry the balls on some kitchen paper. Tip the dough onto your work surface and punch out the air bubbles. To make a Christmas tree shape, you'll need 23 balls. Tear off lumps of dough, ensuring each one is roughly the same size (if you want to be exact, weigh the dough, divide the weight by 23, then weigh each ball of dough as you break them off).
  • Shape each piece of dough into a disc and place a ball of mozzarella in the middle. Pull up the sides of the dough to encase the cheese, pinching the dough together to seal. Roll into a ball and place on the baking sheet, sealed-side down, in a tree shape. Leave a little space between each ball, as they will grow when proving. You're likely to have 2 or 3 balls without mozzarella, so use these pieces of dough for the trunk - for anyone who doesn't like cheese. Cover the tray with a sheet of oiled cling film and set aside for 30 mins until almost doubled in size.
  • While the dough proves, make the tomato dipping sauce. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the garlic and sizzle for 30 secs until fragrant. Add the tomatoes, oregano, vinegar, sugar and some seasoning. Bubble for 30 mins until the sauce is thick. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.
  • When the dough is ready, uncover the baking sheet and bake for 20-25 mins until golden brown. Meanwhile, make the garlic butter. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the garlic and sizzle for 1-2 mins until the garlic is a shade darker (but not brown). When the bread is cooked, transfer it to a platter. Stir most of the parsley into the garlic butter and use a pastry brush to brush it all over the bread. Leave it to soak in, then brush on more. Sprinkle over a little extra parsley to garnish, if you like. Reheat the tomato sauce and serve it alongside the bread with any remaining garlic butter.

PESTO CHEESE STRAW CHRISTMAS TREE

Pesto cheese straw Christmas tree image

Create this tear-and-share pastry tree for a festive family get-together. It's a lovely, playful idea for Boxing Day - and kids will love taking it apart!

Provided by Cassie Best

Categories     Side dish

Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 x 320g sheets ready-rolled all-butter puff pastry
6 tbsp pesto
100g mature cheddar, parmesan or gruyère, finely grated
1 egg, beaten
dips of your choice, to serve (optional)

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Unroll the two pastry sheets, keeping them on their baking parchment. Spread the pesto over one of the pastry sheets, then scatter over half of the grated cheese. Flip the second sheet of pastry on top and press to stick the two pastry sheets together. Remove the top layer of parchment.
  • Cut out a Christmas tree shape - a large triangle with a little stump at the bottom, using as much of the pastry as possible. Cut a star shape out of the offcuts for the top of the tree. Reserve the rest of the offcuts. Lift the tree onto a large baking tray, brush with the beaten egg, then do the same with the star and press it on the tip. Scatter over the rest of the cheese and gently press to help it stick to the pastry.
  • Cut vertical lines into the sides of the tree, about 1cm apart, leaving a 'trunk' of about 2cm up the middle. Twist the strips of pastry and stick them back down to the tray. Do this with all the pastry 'branches'. Cut the offcuts into straws, and arrange them on another baking tray. You can now wrap and chill the tree and offcuts for up to two days, freeze for two months, or bake straightaway.

CHRISTMAS TREE FRUIT PLATTER

Christmas Tree Fruit Platter image

Here's a festive way to serve fruit at your next holiday get-together! Do not prepare too far in advance of your party, or the fruit will dry out. You can mix up any leftover or scrap fruit to make a beautiful salad to serve alongside this Christmas tree fruit platter.

Provided by Kim

Categories     Desserts     Fruit Dessert Recipes     Strawberry Dessert Recipes

Time 25m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 pound green grapes
4 large kiwis, peeled and sliced
4 fresh strawberries, trimmed and sliced
½ cup pomegranate seeds
½ fresh pineapple, peeled and sliced
6 dried dates

Steps:

  • Create an outline of a tree shape using the grapes on a cutting board or serving platter. Begin at the top point of the tree and fan the grapes out into a triangular pattern. Create 3 triangular sections, each slightly larger than the last. Fill in each section with kiwi slices.
  • Arrange sliced strawberries across the tree shape to create a garland effect. Add pomegranate seeds randomly all over the arranged fruit to look like ornaments.
  • Place pineapple slices onto a cutting board. Use small cookie cutters to cut out a star shape and some several small ornament shapes. Place the star at the top of the tree shape, and decorate the rest of the tree with the pineapple ornaments.
  • Arrange dates at the bottom of the tree to look like a trunk. Serve immediately, or keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
