Cioccolata Calda (Hot Chocolate Italian-Style) image

Hot chocolate Italian-style is one of the most amazing treats in the world! You have to try this pudding-like chocolate decadence! Add some Irish cream, cinnamon, and whipped cream for a fun variation, or create your own!

3 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 ½ tablespoons white sugar
1 ½ cups milk
2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Steps:

  • Mix the cocoa powder and sugar together in a small saucepan. Stir the 1 1/2 cups milk into the saucepan until the sugar has dissolved. Place over low heat; slowly bring the mixture to a low simmer.
  • Whisk 2 tablespoons of milk together with the cornstarch in a small cup; slowly whisk the cornstarch slurry into the cocoa mixture. Continue cooking, whisking continually, until the hot chocolate reaches a pudding-like thickness, 2 to 3 minutes.

This recipe should be made with traditional Sicilian chocolate (which contains wheat starch) as made by L'Antica Dolceria Bonajuto in Modica, Italy. It's available via their website at http://ragusaonline.com/bonajuto/_index.htm

Yield Makes 4 small servings.

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 bar (100 grams) Bonajuto chocolate
1 1/2 cups water
Optional: 8 (or more) ladyfingers

Steps:

  • Melt chocolate in the water over low heat. Remove from heat, let mixture rest for 10 minutes. Reheat until hot and whip until foamy with a whisk or immersion mixer (traditionalists would use a Mexican molinillo, a wooden hot-chocolate beater). Pour into a individual cups and serve with ladyfingers, if desired, for dipping. Or eat with a spoon.

Everyone who goes to Spain has to try the hot chocolate. It's so delicious & can be used to dunk Spanish Churros in for breakfast. This recipe is just for the hot chocolate & I will also add my recipe for Spanish Churros as they really go hand in hand. This has a creamy, thick consistancy, it's very indulgent & can really give us women that chocolate fix we all need from time to time. The recipe can also be adjusted according to taste by adding more/less sugar or even omitting it depending on chocolate used or if you like very sweet drinks. I like to make enough to fill 2 big mugs for my daughter & I. We love it at anytime of the day. My daughter likes to add a squirt of cream & a cadburys flake sprinkled on top. I just prefer it on it's own. Anyway, make it - I'm sure you'll love it.

150 g dark chocolate (chopped) or 150 g milk chocolate (chopped)
1 liter milk
1 tablespoon cornflour
2 -4 tablespoons sugar

Steps:

  • Put chocolate & half the milk (500ml) into a pan over a medium heat, stirring until the chocolate has melted.
  • Dissolve the cornflour in the remaining milk & whisk into the chocolate with the sugar.
  • Cook on a low heat & whisk for around 5 minutes or until the chocolate has thickened.
  • Remove from heat & serve into cups.
