CONEY ISLAND SAUCE
This is great on grilled hot dogs. The original recipe hails from Coney Island, NY where hot dogs by the beach are served with a similar sauce topping.

GRANDPA'S CLASSIC CONEY SAUCE
My Grandfather owned a drive-in restaurant back in the 1950's. This is his exact recipe for Coney Dogs from back in the day. I make this on special occasions and it is always hit with friends and family. Enjoy.

Steps:
- I browned my meat first in about 1 1/2 cups of water in a pan or pot. This also helps to remove the fat from the hamburger. Make sure to break up the meat as fine as possible (a potato masher works great). I mince up my onion and add it along with the hamburger as it cooks. When the meat is cooked, drain and return to the pot. Add the garlic and cook for a couple minutes. Add the remaining ingredients except the hot dogs and add the mixture to your crock pot. Turn the crock pot on low and cook for 2 hours. I always start my crock pot on high and then once it gets going I turn to low. I tweaked the sauce up a bit and added brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce. Serve the Coney sauce on top of cooked hot dogs with diced onions and mustard. To cook the sauce on the stove, prepare the mixture the same way and just simmer on low for about 45 minutes to 1 hour.

CONEY ISLAND SAUCE
Posted per request. My family loves this sauce on hot dogs. It's very simple to make, and you can make the sauce hotter by adding extra chili powder or by adding crushed or liquid red pepper to the mixture. Also freezes well.

CONEY ISLAND SAUCE FOR HOT DOGS
This is great on hot dogs, especially grilled ones. Sometimes when my garden overfloweth with peppers I will add one or two of those as well. Hot sauce added is a great addition for those that like a good kick, but leave it out for the littles or those who don't care for the hot. this is best the nexted day once it has been reheated . Please note that I called for 1 cup of water, however if you want it thicker you may reduce the water to 1/2 cup.
