After picking an abundant crop of pears, I was looking for new ways to enjoy them. A friend suggested warming them with butter and brown sugar. This tasty recipe was the result! We like them with vanilla bean ice cream, but plain vanilla or cinnamon are also quite delicious! -Sue Gronholz, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter, cubed
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 cups chopped peeled ripe pears
Vanilla ice cream, optional

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, combine brown sugar, butter and cinnamon. Cook over medium heat until sugar is dissolved, stirring occasionally, 4-5 minutes. Add pears; cook and stir until pears are tender, 5-10 minutes longer. Serve over ice cream if desired.

This is The Best Pear Crisp dessert we've ever eaten. So easy recipe for using up ripe pears! This recipe takes juicy pears and tops them with a delicious crunchy crisp topping! Enjoy hot fresh out of the oven with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

8 pears, chopped with cores removed
2 Tablespoons corn starch
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats
1/3 cup white sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter, melted

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350*F
  • Coat a 9x9 casserole dish with non-stick spray.
  • Slice and core pears, then chop into bit sized pieces. You can leave the skins on or off. (My kids wont eat the crisp unless the skins are off the pears)
  • Toss pears with corn starch and place in casserole dish. Set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, slat and melted butter. Mix well until mixture is crumbly.
  • Spread crisp topping over pears and bake for 35 minutes or until crisp is bubbly and golden.
  • Serve hot with a fresh scoop of ice cream.

8 large firm pears
1/2 cup orange juice
1/3 cup orange marmalade
1/2 cup reduced-fat vanilla wafer, crumbs (about 14 wafers)
1/3 cup finely chopped almonds
1 cup reduced-sugar orange flavored yogurt or 1 cup plain yogurt

Steps:

  • Core pears from bottom, leaving stems intact.
  • Peel pears, leaving a small amount of peel at stem end.
  • Cut 1/4" from the bottom to level if necessary.
  • In a bowl, combine orange juice and orange marmalade; spoon over pears, letting excess drip into bowl.
  • Set aside for sauce.
  • Place wafer crumbs and almonds in a large shallow dish.
  • Roll pears in crumb mixture to coat the bottom 3/4 of each pear.
  • Place in a 13x9x2" baking dish coated with cooking spray.
  • Bake at 350* for 35-45 min.
  • or until tender.
  • Meanwhile, for sauce, combine yogurt and reserved marmalade mixture; refrigerate until serving.
  • Serve with warm pears.

4 ripe pears
knob of butter
½ tsp mixed spice
2 tbsp clear honey
50g cornflake
25g toasted flaked almond

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 200C/fan 180/gas 6. Cut the pears in half lengthways, take out the core (see tip, left), then top with a small knob of butter and a sprinkling of the mixed spice. Sit the pears in a shallow baking dish, then roast for 5 mins until starting to soften. Meanwhile, heat the honey and another knob of butter in a large bowl in the microwave for 30 secs. Toss with the cornflakes and nuts.
  • Take the pears out of the oven, then top with the cornflake mix. Cook for another 5 mins or until the cornflakes take on a rich golden colour. Allow to cool for a few mins (the cornflakes crisp up again as they cool), then serve warm with ice cream.

Steps:

  • Move oven rack to lowest position. Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 9-inch glass pie plate with cooking spray. Carefully peel pears, leaving stems attached; place on large plate. In small bowl, mix orange juice and preserves; brush evenly over pears.
  • In another small bowl, mix wafer crumbs and almonds. Sprinkle crumb mixture evenly over pears; press in gently. Stand pears upright in pie plate. Mix yogurt and remaining preserves mixture from plate; refrigerate.
