CUSTARD PIE
Adopted Recipe. When I tried the recipe I used the suggestions in the reviews, and increased the nutmeg from the original 1/8 teaspoon to 1/4 teaspoon, and also added 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, which was not called for in the original recipe. Use more if desired.

RHUBARB CUSTARD PIE
In Grandmother's day, rhubarb was considered a "spring tonic". Although it's technically a vegetable, it is usually served as a fruit. At our house, we used the first rhubarb of the season to make this pie, and later in summer, we'd make a delicious drink with it, cooked, blended and mixed with strawberry punch.

- To make the crust: Whisk together all of the dry ingredients., Add the shortening, mixing until the mixture is evenly crumbly.
- Add the butter, working it in until it's unevenly crumbly, with some larger chunks of butter remaining., Sprinkle the vinegar and 3 tablespoons of the ice water over the dough while tossing with a fork.
- Just as soon as the dough becomes cohesive (i.e., you can squeeze it into a ball easily), stop mixing; there should still be visible pieces of fat in the dough., Flatten the dough into a disk and wrap it in plastic wrap or waxed paper.
