Ham Balls with Sauce image

This can also be shaped into a loaf and baked. I am also posting a couple of alternative glazes, so you can choose the one that you prefer! This is a Lancaster County Amish/Mennonite specialty! Everyone who comes here raves about the ham balls/hamloaf! I am posting a couple variations, so try them till you find your 'fit!' ENJOY!

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 1/4 lbs cooked ham, ground
2/3 lb fresh ground pork
2/3 lb ground beef
2 eggs
1 cup tomato juice
1 cup cracker crumb
2 tablespoons minced onions
2 tablespoons green peppers, diced fine
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons dry mustard

Steps:

  • Combine ham, pork& beef.
  • Add eggs, tomato juice, crumbs, onion, green pepper& salt.
  • Shape into balls, (slightly larger than golf balls).
  • Place in a 9x13 baking dish.
  • Bake@ 350 for 1 hour.
  • Meanwhile, combine sauce ingredients in a small saucepan.
  • Cook& stir until sugar is dissolved.
  • Pour over hamballs.
  • Bake 30-45 minutes longer.

These smoky-sweet meatballs are a Pennsylvania Dutch specialty. I like setting them out when folks come to visit. -Janet Zeger, Middletown, Pennsylvania

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 pound fully cooked ham, cubed
1 pound ground pork
1 cup 2% milk
1 cup crushed cornflakes
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
GLAZE:
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon ground mustard

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. Pulse ham in batches in a food processor until finely ground. Combine with the next 7 ingredients just until mixed. Shape into 1-in. balls; place in a single layer on greased 15x10x1-in. baking pans., For glaze, cook and stir all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Spoon over ham balls. Bake until ham balls are just beginning to brown, 30-35 minutes, rotating pans and carefully stirring halfway through. Gently toss in glaze. Serve warm.
