Steps:

  • Add the hot water, sugar, and instant coffee to a bowl.
  • Either hand whisk or use an electric mixer until the mixture is fluffy and light.
  • To serve, spoon a dollop over a cup of milk with ice in it and stir.
  • Enjoy!

2 tablespoons hot water

  • In a bowl, combine the instant espresso or coffee, sugar and hot water. Whisk until thickened and frothy, 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Pour the milk into a glass filled with ice. Top with the whipped coffee. Stir with a straw or spoon to combine.

3 tablespoons instant coffee
3 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons hot water
1 1/4 cups whole milk
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Add the instant coffee, sugar and hot or boiling water to large liquid measuring cup. Whip with an electric hand mixer or immersion blender for about 5 to 7 minutes or until the mixture is completely fluffy and has lightened in color. We used one beater on the hand mixer so it would fit into the measuring cup well. Whisk in the vanilla at the end if you are adding.
  • Divide the milk amongst two glasses and top with ice.
  • Split the whipped coffee over the top of each glass and serve immediately.

While it seems like a trend, many have been making whipped coffee for years. In India and Pakistan, whipped coffee has long been a popular home brew, known as phenti hui. In Greece, the frappé is dalgona's older, frothier sibling. And, more generally, there are versions that are shaken with egg whites and served with condensed milk.

1 1/2 teaspoons granulated sugar, plus more to taste
2 tablespoons hot water
Ice, as needed

Steps:

  • Combine granulated instant coffee, sugar and hot water in a medium bowl.
  • Whip by hand using a whisk or with a mixer until the mixture turns from foamy to frothy to creamy.
  • Spoon the fluffy mixture over milk in a glass filled with ice. (You could also spoon it over warm milk for a hot drink.) Gently combine and serve.
