INDIAN STYLE BASMATI RICE

Indian Style Basmati Rice image

This is a savory Indian style rice dish flavored with whole spices and fried onions. Soaking the basmati rice before cooking makes all the difference. Serve with your favorite Indian curry or dal (lentils). Make sure you warn people not to bite into the whole spices!

Categories     Side Dish     Rice Side Dish Recipes

Time 45m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 ½ cups basmati rice
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 (2 inch) piece cinnamon stick
2 pods green cardamom
2 whole cloves
1 tablespoon cumin seed
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
2 ½ cups water
1 small onion, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Place rice into a bowl with enough water to cover. Set aside to soak for 20 minutes.
  • Heat the oil in a large pot or saucepan over medium heat. Add the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, and cumin seed. Cook and stir for about a minute, then add the onion to the pot. Saute the onion until a rich golden brown, about 10 minutes. Drain the water from the rice, and stir into the pot. Cook and stir the rice for a few minutes, until lightly toasted. Add salt and water to the pot, and bring to a boil. Cover, and reduce heat to low. Simmer for about 15 minutes, or until all of the water has been absorbed. Let stand for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork before serving.

BASMATI RICE

Basmati Rice image

Rice plays a very important supporting role on the Indian table. It's an ingredient to know, cherish, and preserve in your kitchen. Here, Chef Saran teaches you a simple way to make sure it's fluffy and gently fragrant.

Provided by Suvir Saran

Categories     side-dish

Time 30m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 cups long-grain basmati rice, rinsed until the water runs clear, then air-dried
1 teaspoon cloves
1 tablespoon cardamom pods
1 cinnamon stick

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine rice, cloves, cardamom pods, and cinnamon. Measure out 2 cups and place in a saucepan. (Reserve the rest in an airtight container for another time: rice will get more fragrant over time.) Add 4 cups of water and bring the rice to a boil, uncovered.
  • When the water is boiling, stir the rice gently; then reduce heat to a low simmer. Cover and cook, 20 minutes. Do not remove the lid during the cooking time.
  • After 20 minutes, remove the lid and, using a two-pronged fork, fluff the rice. Place in a bowl to serve.

Indian Basmati Rice with Peas. Serves: 6. Ingredients. 1 ½ cups basmati rice, either brown or white. 3 cups water. 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter, coconut oil or olive oil (I think butter tastes best.) 1 ½ teaspoons sea salt. 1 ½ teaspoons ground turmeric (you can use more, but you’ll taste it)
What is the smell of basmati rice?

Can I use peanut oil with basmati rice?
I used peanut oil with my white basmati rice, and this recipe was easy and absolutely delicious, I wanted it to go with a much more complicated Pork Vindaloo I was making and needed something that wouldn’t take half the day to prepare. This is five stars in my book. Thank you, Pamela!
