GRANDMA'S WASSAIL



Grandma's Wassail image

An easy recipe for the traditional holiday drink. If you don't have a tea ball, place spice mixture on a small piece of cheesecloth and tie with a string, forming a small pouch.

2 gallons apple cider
2 cups fresh orange juice
1 cup lemon juice
1 cup pineapple juice
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick, broken into pieces

Steps:

  • Mix apple cider, orange juice, lemon juice, pineapple juice, and sugar together in a large pot over medium-low heat.
  • Place cloves and cinnamon in a tea ball; add ball to the apple cider mixture. Simmer mixture until warmed through, about 15 minutes. Serve from pot with large ladle.

2 cups cranberry juice
2 cups pineapple juice
2 cups orange juice
1 small orange, sliced
1/2 cup sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1 teaspoon whole allspice
1/4-1/2 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup light rum (optional)

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients, except lemon juice and rum, in slow cooker; cover and cook on high for 2-3 hours. Do not allow to boil.
  • Season to taste with lemon juice, stir in rum.

  • Pour the apple cider, orange juice, and cranberries in a large heavy-bottomed pot and set to medium heat on the stove. Bring to a slow boil and immediately reduce heat to low.
  • Place the whole allspice berries and the star anise (if using) in a tea strainer and add to the simmering pot. If you don't have a tea strainer use a coffee filter tied up with string or place the spices direction into the pot (you will just need to use a small slotted spoon to remove them before serving).
  • Add the cinnamon sticks, fresh cranberries, orange slices, and apple to the pot and let simmer for 30 minutes. Ladle into mugs and serve with your choice of alcohol if desired.
