1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
½ onion, finely chopped
½ cup shredded Colby Jack or Cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 egg
1 (1 ounce) envelope dry onion soup mix
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon crushed dried rosemary
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat a grill for high heat.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, onion, cheese, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, egg, onion soup mix, garlic, garlic powder, parsley, basil, oregano, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 patties.
  • Grill patties for 5 minutes per side on the hot grill, or until well done. Serve on buns with your favorite condiments.

1 lb ground beef, browned
2 onions, large chopped
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 (16 ounce) bag elbow macaroni
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 teaspoon garlic salt (I use Lawry's)
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon chili powder

Steps:

  • Saute beef, 1/2 tsp of red pepper flakes and 2 onions in large frying pan. Drain excess fat. Lots of onions makes this good.
  • Meanwhile, in another pan cook macaroni in boiling, salted water until tender. Set aside until almost ready to serve.
  • When beef and onions are finished cooking, add the canned, crushed tomatores and approximately 1/2 cup water; also add garlic salt, pepper, chili powder and mix well.
  • Simmer for about 20 minutes; then add cooked macaroni noodles and mix well when ready to serve. If you add the macaroni noodles too soon, they may over cook and get mushy.

1 cup uncooked rice
2 Tbsp oil
4-8 eggs
2-3 chopped scallions, for garnish
2 Tbsp chopped parsley, for garnish
2 Tbsp oil
1/2 onion, chopped
8oz mushrooms, sliced
2 cups beef stock
1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp cornstarch
2 Tbsp water
1.5 lbs ground beef
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
1 tsp garlic powder

Steps:

  • Cook the rice according to the instructions on the package.
  • Mix salt, pepper, garlic powder and worcestershire sauce into the ground beef and make 4 large patties, or 6 regular sized patties. We recommend making flatter and larger sized patties, as they would shrink while cooking.
  • Heat oil in a skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium high heat and cook the patties until browned to your liking on both sides and the internal temperature reaches 160°F. Plate them out.
  • In the same pan, add in a little more oil, if required, and sauté chopped onions till golden brown. Stir in sliced mushrooms and sauté till soft.
  • Add in beef stock along with worcestershire sauce and soy sauce and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Thicken the sauce with cornstarch slurry. Mix 1 Tbsp cornstarch with 2 Tbsp water and slowly stir it into the gravy. Stir till the gravy thickens up. Remove from heat.
  • Fry the sunny side eggs to doneness you like. We like the egg whites cooked with the yolk still little runny.
  • Plate Loco Moco in a bowl or plate by placing some rice, followed by the burger patty on top. Pour gravy all over the burger patty. Place the egg on top (you can serve it with one or two eggs per portion) and garnish with chopped scallions and parsley.

This is a simple recipe handed down by my Mom. I have no idea where she came up with the name, but it makes for interesting conversation when someone asks what I'm fixing for dinner and it's "Slum Gum" night!

1 lb ground chuck
1 (14 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 (14 3/4 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained
1 small diced onion
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic clove
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup ketchup

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground chuck and onions until the meat is no longer pink. Drain excess grease from the meat and return the meat to the skillet.
  • Add the remaining ingredients to the skillets and simmer over medium-low heat for 15 minutes.
  • Serve immediately.

1 pound ground beef (I used 80/20 - fattier meat means a juicier burger!)
1/2 cup shredded Monterey jack cheese
1/4 cup BBQ sauce
1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt
pepper, to taste
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup pickle relish
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
5 hamburger buns (we like sesame seed buns)

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, shredded cheese, bbq sauce, and seasonings. Don't add too much bbq sauce or the patties will have a hard time taking shape. Shape patties that are about 1 inch thick (about 5 patties). (You can also freeze the patties after shaping them for about 1 hour to help them hold their shape.)
  • Turn grill up to high and let it get hot.
  • Reduce heat to medium-high and place the burgers on the grill. Allow this side of the patty to cook for about 4-6 minutes, but make sure it does not burn. Then flip the burger over and cook until done.
  • For the sauce, combine all sauce ingredients and whisk until well mixed. Taste and adjust ingredients to your liking.
  • Assemble the burgers and serve with the special sauce and other hamburger toppings of choice.
