This is our family's version. I'm posting it here for my kids, who like to make it now that they live away from home.

1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
1/2 cup diced onion
1/2 cup diced green pepper
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/3 cups ketchup
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
salt
pepper
6 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef with onion, pepper and garlic.
  • Add remaining ingredients (except hamburger buns).
  • Simmer gently for 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, lightly toast bun halves in 350º oven, cut side up.
  • Serve a generous heap of meat on each bun.

2 tablespoons shortening
1 cup onion, diced
1 cup green pepper, chopped
1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped
1 tablespoon mustard
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 teaspoon pepper
3/4 cup ketchup
6 -8 onion rolls

Steps:

  • Brown meat and vegetables in a skillet with the shortening.
  • Drain off liquid.
  • In a small bowl combine mustard, sugar, vinegar, salt, pepper and ketchup.
  • Combine until well blended.
  • Pour sauce over meat mixture and combine until all coated.
  • Let simmer for 1 hour.
  • Serve on onion rolls.

1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons prepared mustard

Steps:
