Steps:
- Put dill pickle juice, water, vegetable oil, salt, white sugar, wheat germ, oats, whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, and yeast, respectively, in the pan of a bread machine.
- Select Sandwich and Three-Pound Loaf settings; press Start. Cycle should take about 3 hours 10 minutes to complete.
- Remove loaf from bread pan and allow to cool on wire rack at least 20 minutes before slicing.

- Combine cucumbers and onions in large heatproof glass bowl.
- Bring remaining ingredients to boil in medium saucepan on medium-high heat; simmer on medium-low heat 5 min. Cool 5 min.
- Pour vinegar mixture over vegetables; mix lightly. Cool completely.
- Refrigerate 2 hours.

MICROWAVE BREAD-AND-BUTTER PICKLES
Like a bread and butter pickle and really super easy. You can even play with the proportions a bit. I like to increase the vinegar, salt and spices a bit but you could make it sweeter too. Be prepared to make this one over and over if you have any pickle lovers in the house.

Steps:
- Stir sugar and vinegar in a large microwave-safe bowl until sugar has dissolved; mix in salt, mustard seed, celery seed, and turmeric. Stir cucumbers and onion into the pickling mixture.
- Microwave on high, stirring twice, until cucumber slices are tender and onion is translucent, 7 to 8 minutes. Chill before serving.

BREAD-AND-BUTTER PICKLES MY WAY
I use the slicing blade on my Cuisinart to make the slicing job fast and easy. I have monkeyed around with this recipe since the early 1980s, and about 10 years ago I settled on this combination of ingredients. I don't process them (I did once and I found the texture of the pickles suffered) but you certainly can if you wish. You can also store them in the fridge (if you have room) if you have safety concerns about not processing them; they'll be eaten pretty fast so won't be taking up a lot of room for long!

Steps:
- I recommend using a Cuisinart fitted with a slicing blade to make the preparation of the vegetables less tedious.
- In a very large container, combine sliced cucumbers and onions, and salt.
- Cover with a generous amount of ice cubes.
- Cover and let sit for approximately four hours.
- Drain well and remove any ice; lightly rinse with cold water and drain well again.
- In a large preserving kettle, combine sugar, vinegar and spices and bring to a boil.
- Add drained vegetables and bring back to a boil.
- Fill hot sterilized canning jars with mixture and seal.
- Please note that I have made this recipe for ages and I do not process them; I know that goes against the grain nowadays, but that's what I do; if you wish to process them, I would recommend a 10-minute boiling water bath.
