SERVIETTE/NAPKIN, TULIP FOLD.

Serviette/Napkin, Tulip Fold. image

My interest in serviette folding was born on a wet day at my Grandmother's house, I was a pre teen and helping her with the ironing and watched while she ironed serviettes into wonderful shapes and neatly stacked them for use. I asked her to show me how and she did. Once you know several folds and people see them, they often have at least one other that you haven't seen before, you gain knowledge of the new one and on it goes. Now that I have already posted all the napkin folds I know, I decided to look on the net for some new ones to learn. This one was called the Tulip fold and is a simple variation of recipe#241598 and recipe#241006. In fact I thought it was the same, but making the pleat in the middle creates a central petal longer than the two side ones and gives a fractionally different end result. I'll let you decide which you suits your table best. Excellent and easy with cloth serviettes. You will need one serviette ring per serviette.

Time 1m

Yield 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 paper, serviette (large)
1 cloth, serviette (large)
2 napkin rings

Steps:

  • Lay your serviette square out flat before you in a diamond shape.
  • Fold the South point of the diamond up to meet the North point of the diamond.
  • Place one hand on the North point and the other at the center of the base of the triangle, lift the serviette up so that you create a ridged pleat that stands up between your fingers. Lay the serviette down flat so that you have a triangle with a raised ridge running vertically down the centre.
  • Take the East point and bring it up to a point half way towards the North point, this will create a pleat in the right hand side, repeat with the West point.
  • Slip the serviette ring onto the base of the serviette where the folds meet and pull about 1/3 of the way up.
  • Fan out your tulip so that the central pleat and the sides are symetrical.

SERVIETTE/NAPKIN FOLDING, MARIE'S LILY PAD FLOWER

Serviette/Napkin Folding, Marie's Lily Pad Flower image

Between the teachings of my Grandmother, an Aunt, my Mother and several restaurants I learned a lot about serviette/ napkin folding.. Works well with cloth napkins, or larger paper ones. I have included step-by-step photographs to illustrate/supplement the written directions. For neater presentation use ironed napkins for this fold. This one is one that a friend of mine who did origami called the Lily Pad Flower ( Thanks Marie!) I subsequently taught it to another friend who's mother would lay in the center of the finished flower, a small tea-light candles on thick little round metal disks that they originally got from an Central Otago blacksmith in New Zealand in the 1930's. I personally use this one as a base on which to stand water glasses on the table.

  • Take the East point of this diamond and fold it into the center point, and repeat with the other 3 corners. The serviette will be square again and have gaps in the form of an X.
  • Carefully turn the serviette over and fold each of the corners into the center point again.
  • Carefully turn it over and you will see 4 loose points on the underside.(this step is only to make the next step clearer).
  • Turn back over to the previous side, lay the serviette down and press firmly on the center point where the 4 corners meet. Carefully reach underneath with your other hand and grab one of the loose points on the underside and bring it to the outside of the corner that it belongs to. This creates the outer petal of that quarter of the flower.
  • Repeat with the other 3 corners.
  • If you are not putting something in the center of this serviette you may need to carefully secure the 4 central points with a pin.

COOKIE TULIPS

Cookie Tulips image

These cookies not only look fancy but they taste amazing too! Super easy to make and will impress the whole family!

Provided by CookBakeandDecorate

Categories     Desserts     Cookies

Time 1h

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 10

¼ cup butter, softened
½ cup white sugar
7 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 egg whites, beaten
1 (4 ounce) package cream cheese at room temperature
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
17 large fresh strawberries, divided

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone sheet liner. Grease the outsides of 12 2-inch diameter baking glasses or small bowls.
  • Mash the butter and white sugar together in a bowl until smooth, and mix in the flour, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and the egg whites to make a smooth batter. Drop about 2 1/2 tablespoons of the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, and use a spoon or spatula to spread the dough out into a very thin circle about 7 inches in diameter. Repeat with the remaining batter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are very lightly browned at the edges and the centers are set, 7 to 9 minutes. Watch them carefully so they don't overbake. Pull the sheet from the oven, and immediately slip a spatula underneath each flat cookie; center and drape them over the greased glasses to harden into small wavy bowls. Allow to cool completely.
  • While the cookies cool over their molds, beat the cream cheese and confectioners' sugar in a bowl until smooth; mix in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Remove green tops and cores from 5 strawberries; place them into a small bowl, and mash to a juicy, slightly lumpy texture; mix the strawberries into the cream cheese mixture. Gently fold the whipped topping into the strawberry cream until thoroughly combined.
  • Spoon about 3 tablespoons of the strawberry cream into each cookie bowl, then top with a pretty fresh strawberry with green top. Store leftover cookies in an airtight container, and leftover cream in refrigerator.

Now that I have already posted all the napkin folds I know, I decided to look on the net for some new ones to learn. This one was called the Lotus and as far as I can see it's just a step further than Recipe #240998, but since it's listed as a napkin fold in it's own right and I have learned it as a new one and added it here.

This creates the outer petal of that quarter of the flower.
  • Repeat with the other 3 corners.
  • At this point you have the napkin that I call Marie's Lily Pad Flower. but the Lotus calls for an extra step.
  • Reach undernieth again and you will find a second layer of 4 flaps on the bottom, gently pull them out to the front side ( hold the centre points firmly so that everything stays intact) and you will have a fuller looking flower that has additional petals/ leaves at the sides, inbetween the main petals. This addition turns the napkin into a "Lotus".

TULIPES (FREE-FORM DESSERT CUPS)

Tulipes (Free-form dessert cups) image

Provided by Craig Claiborne And Pierre Franey

Categories     dessert

Time 30m

Yield 10 - 12 free-form dessert cups

Number Of Ingredients 5

6 tablespoons butter, plus butter for brushing the baking sheet
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 egg whites

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • Put the six tablespoons of butter and the sugar into a mixing bowl, and start beating with a wire whisk or with an electric mixer. Beat until light and creamy.
  • Beat in the flour and vanilla.
  • Beat the egg whites until they stand in soft peaks. Fold the whites into the creamed mixture.
  • Select a baking sheet large enough to fit neatly in the oven. Brush the top surface with butter.
  • Using a mixing or other round bowl that is five inches in diameter, invert it onto the baking sheet and trace a circle in the light butter coating. Make as many separately traced circles as possible; the maximum may be two or three to a sheet.
  • Spoon one or two tablespoons of the batter into the center of each circle, one at a time. Carefully smooth the batter into one very thin layer, less than an eighth of an inch thick, to cover the circle. Continue filling the circles.
  • Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake three to three and one-half minutes, watching carefully that the pastries do not burn. Remove the sheet from the oven and immediately lift up the circles one at a time, carefully shaping them while hot (place the brown bottom side up) in the center of a cup (a regular-shape rounded coffee cup or Chinese soup or rice bowl is suitable). When pushed into the center, the edges should be neatly fluted or ruffled. Let cool and remove from the mold.

STEP BY STEP SERVIETTE /NAPKIN FOLDING , EASY!

Step by Step Serviette /Napkin Folding , Easy! image

Another easy serviette folding technique. This works well with heavier paper serviettes and is so easy that it can be done is seconds. I have accompanied / supplimented my description with step by step photographs. If you have commercial paper serviettes that are already folded into quarters, then skip directly to Step 3.

Provided by kiwidutch

Categories     < 15 Mins

Time 2m

Yield 4 napkins

Number Of Ingredients 2

2 paper, serviettes
2 paper, napkins

Steps:

  • Lay your serviette square out flat before you. Fold it in half horizontally.
  • Take the serviette and fold it in half again vertically so that it is now a small square a quarter the size of the origonal square.
  • Only one corner of the square will have 4 open / loose edges, rotate your square so that it is a flat diamond shape with the open corner pointing downwards. We will call this the "South" corner, and the top corner opposite "North" and the other two remaining corners East and West.
  • Fold the South corner up, so that it meeting and laying on top of the North corner. Your serviette is now in the form of a triangle.
  • Gently crease the bottom ( east /west line) of the triangle well.
  • The South corner consists of 4 seperate flaps, take only the outer-most of these and fold it back south again, expect that the crease line should be about 1/2 inch (1 cm) HIGHER ( but still parallel to) the bottom ( east/west) straight edge of the triangle. This leaves a thick triangle on the top and a very thin, one paper layer, smaller triangle on the bottom.
  • Take the next layer of the loose flap at North, and fold it south, with it's crease line about 1/2 inch (1 cm) ABOVE the crease line from the first folded down flap. Now you will have a smaller triangle folded down in the South position on top of the first one.
  • Repeat Step 7 until all four flaps are folded down, pointing South in triangles on top of each other, the one on the bottom will be the biggest and the one on the top will be the smallest.
  • Carefully pick up the serviette and bring the East and West corners together at the back, then carefully crease firmly the fold that runs from the center of the top main triangle to the point at North.
  • Turn the serviette around and set the finished serviette onto the table with the North point closest to you on the table, with East and West points on the table furthest away from you and the South points pointing up into the air up the center.
  • Works best wih heavier paper serviettes.

Now that I have already posted all the napkin folds I know, I decided to look on the net for some new ones to learn. This one is a variation on the Simple Fan and is prepared the same way but finished differently for a new effect, like the Simple Fan, ironing the completed accordion strip gives better definition to the final serviette. Cloth serviettes can be ironed into the accordion shape in advance and stacked tightly into a shoe box ready for use. You will need one serviette ring per serviette.

Time 2m

Yield 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 paper, serviette (large)
1 cloth, serviette (large)
2 napkin rings

Steps:

  • Lay your serviette square out flat before you.
  • Take the bottom right and left corners and make an accordion fold strips all the way up to the top right and left corners. If you press these with an iron the pleats will be nice and sharp. Leave unironed for a wavy casual look. (but ironed looks neater) You will now have a thin band the width of your accordion fold.
  • Fold the serviette in half so that is is now half it's length and slip a serviette ring over the fold end of the accordion strip and pull gently about 1 inch ( 2.5 cm) up.
  • Fan out the accordion pleats at the top to make a pleasing balance to the serviette. Present on a plate.

Steps:

  • Lay your serviette square out flat before you in a square shape.
  • Take the bottom two corners and fold them 1/3 of the way up the serviette. The fold line should be at the bottom.
  • Take the top two corners and fold them 1/3 down so that the top two corners are level with the fold line that you made in the previous step. You now have a rectangle in front of you.
  • Place your finger in the centre top point of the rectangle and with the other hand take the top right hand corner of the rectangle and fold it to the center bottom of the rectangle, but continue past the bottom of the rectangle so that you have a vertical straight line running down the center and a small flap sticking out that the bottom. Repeat with the left side of the serviette.
  • Then fold the bottom two flaps back on top of themselves so that they are level with the bottom of the rest of the serviette. You will have before you a thin rectangle shape on the bottom and a triangle on top of it and there will be a vertical gap in the center of both of them.
  • Take the right hand end of the rectangle and fold it into the center, repeat with the left hand side of the rectangle but insert it into the opposite piece.
