Family Favorite Apple Crisp image

A family favorite. The house smells great when it's cooking! Serve warm. Vanilla ice cream is a great accompaniment.

3 pounds apples - peeled, cored, and sliced
1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 ½ cups brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Spread apple slices into prepared baking pan. Dot with 1 tablespoon butter pieces and sprinkle with lemon juice. Mix flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt together in a bowl. Cut butter into oat mixture until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs; spread over apples.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until topping is browned and apples are soft and tender, about 30 minutes.

8 apples
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 egg
1 ½ tablespoons ground cinnamon
¼ cup white sugar
1 tablespoon butter, melted

Steps:

  • Mix together flour, 1 cup sugar, baking powder, and egg. The mixture will look like cornmeal.
  • Peel, core, and slice the apples. Mix together with 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon. Place apples in a greased 8 inch square pan. Spread flour mixture over the apples. Mix together 1 tablespoon cinnamon and 1/4 cup sugar; sprinkle over the top of the crisp. Drizzle with butter or margarine.
  • Bake at 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) for one hour. Serve warm.

4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces

1/2 cup chopped walnuts
4 apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/2-inch dice
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Vanilla ice cream or heavy cream, for serving (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter an 8-inch square baking dish.
  • 2. For topping, combine the butter, sugar, flour, oats and cinnamon in a bowl. Work together with fingertips until mixture resembles coarse meal. Toss in nuts; set aside.
  • 3. Toss the apples with lemon juice and spoon into the baking dish. Sprinkle topping evenly over the apples. Bake in center of the oven for 1 hour or until bubbly and the apples are tender. Let cool slightly. Serve warm, topped with ice cream or cream, if desired.
