Easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Recipe image

My family's secret homemade spaghetti sauce is easy to make using a few staple ingredients you may already have on hand! Perfectly thick and packed with flavor, you'll be ditching that store bought pasta sauce!

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (I used Private Reserve Greek extra virgin olive oil)
1 medium yellow onion, grated
3 garlic cloves, finely minced
2 carrots, finely grated (use a food processor or a grater)
28 oz canned crushed tomatoes
1/2 cup water (pasta cooking water, preferred)
Kosher salt and black pepper
1 tbsp dried oregano
1 tsp sweet Spanish paprika
Pinch red pepper flakes, optional
Handful fresh basil, about ½ cup packed, torn
Handful fresh parsley, about ½ cup packed, chopped
3/4 lb to 1 lb of cooked pasta of your choice

Steps:

  • In a large pan heat the extra virgin olive oil over medium heat until just shimmering. Add the onions, garlic, and finely grated carrots. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring regularly until softened.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes and about 1/2 cup water. Add a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Stir in oregano, paprika, crushed pepper flakes, if using. Finally, stir in the fresh basil and parsley.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil, then turn heat to low. Cover and let simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes. Check partway through, and if you feel the sauce is too thick, you can add a bit more water (preferably some of your pasta cooking water). When sauce is ready, throw in more fresh basil, if you like.
  • If serving for dinner, add cooked pasta of your choice to the sauce. Mix to combine and let the pasta cook in the sauce over low heat for about 5 minutes.

1 chopped onion
5 cloves garlic, chopped
2 teaspoons olive oil
2 (28 ounce) cans peeled ground tomatoes in paste
1 (6 ounce) can Italian-style tomato paste
7 cups water
3 tablespoons Italian seasoning
2 tablespoons dried basil
1 teaspoon white sugar
½ cup red wine
1 pinch crushed red pepper

Steps:

  • In large saucepan over medium heat, saute onion and garlic in olive oil until soft. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, water, Italian seasoning, basil, sugar, wine, and crushed red pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Serve.

1 large onion, chopped
1 large green pepper, chopped
2-1/2 cups water, divided
3 Italian turkey sausage links (4 ounces each), casings removed
1 can (29 ounces) tomato sauce
1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained
3 cans (6 ounces each) tomato paste
1/2 cup minced fresh parsley
5 to 6 garlic cloves, minced
3 teaspoons Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
6 cups hot cooked spaghetti
Shredded Parmesan cheese, optional

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven, combine the celery, onion, green pepper and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; cook, uncovered, for 10-12 minutes or until vegetables are tender and water is reduced., Crumble sausage over vegetable mixture; cook until meat is no longer pink. Stir in the tomato sauce, tomatoes, tomato paste, parsley, garlic, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, pepper and remaining water. , Bring to a boil. 1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean)
1/2 cup chopped sweet red pepper
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 pound sliced fresh mushrooms
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) Italian diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
1/2 cup water
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Hot cooked spaghetti

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook the beef, peppers, celery, onion and garlic over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are tender; drain. This is a recipe that I came up with by tweaking ones that I have read and my Mom's recipe. Since I don't actually have my Mom's recipe, it died with her, because she never wrote it down! I, on the other hand, have been writing them down and passing them on to family, friends and Recipezaar. Hopefully, one recipe will be great, family loves it, and it keeps on going because everyone loves it!! This recipe is totally from scratch and can be canned. I cook this in a big turkey roaster so it can simmer for hours. The whole house smells wonderful while its cooking!! Enjoy!!

16 quarts roma-type tomatoes, peeled, cored, and roughly chopped
2 full heads of garlic
4 large onions
8 sweet peppers (green, yellow, red)
1 cup brown sugar, loosely packed and heaping
2 tablespoons canning salt
1/4 cup lemon juice (bottled only)
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons basil
3 tablespoons oregano
3 tablespoons parsley
1 tablespoon rosemary
12 bay leaves
2 tablespoons whole allspice
2 tablespoons fennel seeds
2 teaspoons red pepper flakes

Steps:

  • Blanch, peel and core the tomatoes. Chop them so they are in smallish pieces. Place in roaster.
  • Peel garlic and place in a food processor. Half and quarter the onions and toss them in with the garlic. Process until finely chopped. Pour in with tomatoes.
  • Seed and clean the peppers. Cut in chunks and toss in the food processor. Process until finely chopped. Pour into tomatoes. Stir up well.
  • Add remaining ingredients except the bay leaves, allspice and fennel. Take these and divide into two cheese cloth sections. Take each cheese cloth and tie it with spices enclosed. Add to tomatoes.
  • Start roaster at about 300°F Get it hot, stirring occasionally. Let it cook for about 3 hours.
  • Turn cooker down to 200°F and let simmer either all day or overnight. (I let it go overnight, and when I came out of the bedroom, the house was filled with yumminess).
  • Once it reaches the consistency you like, I like mine thick, ladle hot sauce into clean, hot quart jars. Wipe rim clean, place two part canning lids in place and tighten to finger tight.
  • Put hot jars into readied pressure canner, process according to processors directions for 25 minutes.
