SLOW COOKER TURNIP GREENS RECIPE

Slow Cooker Turnip Greens Recipe image

Slow Cooker Turnip Greens makes easy work of a delicious Southern dish. This turnip greens recipe is a favorite and perfect for busy weeknights, Sunday suppers and New Year's Day!

Provided by Robyn Stone | Add a Pinch

Categories     Side Dish

Time 5h30m

Number Of Ingredients 5

8 pounds fresh turnip greens (about 2 bunches)
3 medium turnips (peeled and cut into quarters)
1 (1/2 pound) ham hock (or 2 tablespoons olive oil)
1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional)
pinch red pepper flakes (optional)

Steps:

  • Fill clean sink about halfway with lukewarm water. Chop turnip greens and place into the sink to clean. Agitate the water and turnip greens with your hands to dislodge any dirt and grit from the turnip greens. Drain water and repeat once or twice until the greens feel clean and no dirt remains in the bottom of the sink when rinsing.
  • Spray insert of slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Add half of greens to the slow cooker with about 1 cup of water, peeled and quartered turnips, and ham hock or olive oil. If you are using the sugar and red pepper flakes, add those as well.
  • Cook on low setting for about 1 hour until greens have reduced. Add remaining greens to the slow cooker and set time on low for 4 more hours.
  • Note: The longer turnip greens cook, the better the flavor, in my opinion.

SOUTHERN TURNIP GREENS

Southern Turnip Greens image

Learn how to cook turnip greens just like they do in the South. Greens are slowly simmered with pork jowl, apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper for a tender, tasty soul food side dish.

Provided by Lisa B.

Categories     Side dishes

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 large bunches of turnip or collard greens (washed)
1 (16 ounce package) Clifty Farm pork jowls, chopped ()
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Remove the center stems from the greens. Discard the stems and coarsely chop the leaves.
  • Heat the pork jowls in a large stock pot over medium heat. Cook for 3-5 minutes to render off some of the grease, but so not drain the grease.
  • Add one quart (4 cups) of water to the pot. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Add the cider vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper to the pot. Bring the pot to a boil again.
  • Add the greens. You may need to work in batches, allowing the greens to wilt down to make room for more.
  • Reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot again, then cook for 1 -2 hours. The longer the greens cook, the more tender they will become.
  • Season the greens with salt and pepper if needed.
