Baked BBQ Chicken (Apple Cider BBQ Sauce) image

This delicious oven baked BBQ chicken is marinated and coated in a delicious and tangy apple cider sauce for a tasty family meal. Easy to make with just a few ingredients, this recipe will make your tastebuds tingle!

2/3 cup ketchup
2/3 cup apple cider
1/3 cup honey
3 garlic cloves (minced)
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
2 ½ pounds chicken breasts

Steps:

  • In a bowl, stir together all the BBQ sauce ingredients. Reserve ½ cup of the sauce. Set aside.
  • Place the chicken breasts in a zip top plastic bag. Add in the reserved ½ cup sauce and place in the fridge for at 1 hour, and up to overnight, to marinade.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Simmer the BBQ sauce in a small saucepan for 10 minutes, or until thickened and fragrant.
  • Place the marinated chicken on the baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and baste the chicken with a thick glaze of bbq sauce. Return to the oven and bake for 20-30 more minutes, basting every 10.
  • Remove, baste again, and place back into the oven set to broil for 3-5 minutes until the bbq sauce forms a glaze.
  • Serve with your favorite sides and enjoy!

Recipe video above. This is how I make BBQ Chicken in the oven when I'm craving sticky chicken but don't want to fire up the BBQ! Made with a quick homemade BBQ sauce, the chicken is braised in the sauce which is loaded with extra flavour from the juices of the chicken. Fabulous sticky glaze, juicy inside!

1 cup ketchup (or Australian/UK tomato sauce)
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
4 tbsp brown sugar
2 tsp mustard powder
2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp fresh black pepper
1 cup water
1.5 kg / 3 lb chicken thighs (bone in skin on), drumsticks or wings ((Note 2))
Fresh parsley, chives or finely chopped green onions (, for garnish)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 200°C/390°F.
  • Sauce: Mix all Sauce ingredients in a ceramic/glass baking dish (Note 3), then mix in water.
  • Add chicken and turn to coat. Place chicken skin side down.
  • Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven, turn chicken, spoon over Sauce.
  • Bake for a further 30 minutes, then remove and spoon over Sauce.
  • Skim off fat (optional): Tilt pan and spoon or drain off excess fat.
  • Broil/grill - Change to broiler/grill on high. Spoon sauce over chicken generously, then place under grill / broiler for 2 to 3 minutes to caramelise the chicken and the sauce to thicken more. Do not walk away - this can happen quickly!
  • Serve chicken, garnished with parsley or green onions, if using. Pictured in post with Mashed Potato and Green Bean Salad (minus feta).

1 pound boneless, (skinless chicken thighs)
1 pound chicken drumsticks
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
apple cider BBQ sauce
2/3 cup ketchup
2/3 cup apple cider
½ cup honey
3 garlic cloves, (minced)
5 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Drizzle a baking sheet with the olive oil.
  • Pat the chicken completely dry with a paper towel. Season it with the salt and pepper evenly. Place the chicken on the sheet, but don't crowd the pan. Use two if needed!
  • Roast the chicken for 25 minutes. Remove it from the oven and brush it with the BBQ sauce. Bake it for another 5 to 7 minutes. Flip, brush with sauce again, and bake for another 5. Repeat the process one or two more times, slathering the chicken with the sauce.
  • Let cool slightly before serving. And serve it with the extra sauce!

1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 roasting chicken (6 to 7 pounds)
1 can (11-1/2 ounces) unsweetened apple juice
1/2 cup apple butter
1/4 cup barbecue sauce

Steps:

  • Combine the salt, garlic powder, pepper and cayenne; sprinkle over chicken., Prepare grill for indirect heat, using a drip pan. Pour half of the apple juice into another container and save for another use. With a can opener, poke additional holes in the top of the can. Holding the chicken with legs pointed down, lower chicken over the can so it fills the body cavity. Place chicken on grill rack over drip pan. , Grill, covered, over indirect medium heat for 1-1/2-2 hours or until a thermometer reads 180°. Combine apple butter and barbecue sauce; baste chicken occasionally during the last 30 minutes. Remove chicken from grill; cover and let stand for 10 minutes. Remove chicken from can before carving.

Nothing beats sticky chicken with barbecue sauce. Start in the oven to make sure it's cooked properly, then grill over hot coals for that lovely BBQ flavour

4 chicken thighs and 4 chicken drumsticks, skin on
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp cider vinegar
4 tbsp light brown soft sugar
4 tbsp tomato ketchup
75ml apple juice
1 tbsp Dijon mustard

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Put the chicken in a roasting tin, season well and cook for 40 mins or until cooked through. Either carry on with the recipe or cool and chill. This step can be done up to two days ahead.
  • Put the sauce ingredients in a pan and bring to a simmer, then keep cooking until it thickens a little and looks shiny. Use straight away or cool and chill. The sauce will keep for a week in the fridge.
  • Heat a barbecue until the coals are glowing white hot. Brush the chicken pieces all over with the sauce and barbecue them on each side until they are browned and sticky, then brush once more with the sauce. Don't worry about cooking them through, as they are already cooked. If you want to cook them indoors, coat them in the sauce and grill on a medium heat on all sides.
