Oh-so-popular at the Fall 2007 Fashion Week, these burgers are minus the meat. Instead, a hearty mushroom takes its place.

1 medium portabella mushroom (approx 5 oz)
1 egg
2 ounces flour
3 ounces breadcrumbs
olive oil
salt and pepper
brioche bun
sliced tomatoes
sliced bread
2 slices American cheese

Steps:

  • Clean and remove stem and dark brown gills of mushroom.
  • Sprinkle olive oil on top of mushroom, add some salt and pepper, place on a sheet pan and roast mushroom for 10 minutes in oven at 275 degrees.
  • After oven, dip mushroom in flour, then dip in egg and then dip in breadcrumbs consecutively.
  • Deep fry mushroom in oil for 2 minutes in oil temp of 375 degrees.
  • Remove and then garnish with lettuce tomato and cheese and place on brioche bun.

HOMEMADE IMPOSSIBLE BURGER



Homemade Impossible Burger image

Impossible burgers are easy to make at home and are the perfect base for all of your favorite burger toppings.

2 cups baby portabella mushrooms (sliced)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup white rice (cooked)
8 ounces tempeh (chopped)
1/4 cup quick cook oats
1 small beet (shredded)
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 tablespoon steak sauce
1 teaspoon vegetable bouillon
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/4 cup oil, for cooking
For serving: 4 burger buns, ketchup, lettuce

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Add the sliced mushrooms, olive oil, and salt, and pepper to a large sauté pan over medium high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms have browned and softened, 10 to 13 minutes.
  • Add the mushrooms to a food processor with the rice, tempeh, oats, beet, nutritional yeast, steak sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, vegetable bouillon, and liquid smoke, if using. Process until completely ground with mostly small pieces. Continue to pulse until there are no large pieces. It should look like ground beef.
  • Form the "meat" into four balls and form each of those balls into a patty. Place them on parchment paper.
  • Heat a large nonstick skillet on medium-high heat. Add the canola oil. When the oil shimmers, add the patties. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes per side or until golden brown on both sides and heated through. Alternatively, use a griddle pan brushed lightly with the oil.
  • Remove the patties from the heat and serve on the buns with lettuce, ketchup, and other favorite toppings.

1-1/3 pounds ground beef
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Optional toppings: Lettuce leaves, sliced tomato, sliced onion, bacon and mayonnaise

Steps:

  • Shape ground beef into four 3/4-in.-thick patties. Just before grilling, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill burgers, covered, over medium heat until a thermometer reads 160°, 5-7 minutes on each side. Top bun bottoms with burgers. If desired, serve with lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon and mayonnaise.

1 pound ground beef
½ onion, finely chopped
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (e.g. Tabasco™)
1 tablespoon dry bread crumbs
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon dried parsley
salt and pepper to taste
⅓ cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
½ fresh red chile pepper, finely chopped
4 slices pickled jalapeno pepper, finely chopped

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a bowl, mix the ground beef, onion, egg, hot pepper sauce, and bread crumbs. Season with paprika, parsley, salt, and pepper. In a separate bowl, mix the cheese, red chile pepper, and jalapeno pepper. Form the beef mixture into 4 balls, and press a well in the center of each. Stuff with equal amounts of the cheese mixture. Press meat around filling to seal. Arrange on a baking sheet, and press gently into thick patties.
  • Bake 20 minutes in the preheated oven, turning once, until well done.
