THE OFFICIAL RECIPEZAAR WITHDRAWAL PATCH
Explanation of recipe title and directions: Once upon a time, this site was called Recipezaar. It was a mystical, magical place, with addictive forums. The idea for this recipe was born in those forums. Melly Mel asked if there was a withdrawal patch for Recipezaar when she was going to be away for a while. I rushed in to provide this home remedy - but remember, this is not for long term use. You must return to Recipezaar as soon as your circumstances permit!

HOMEMADE ZA'ATAR
This za'atar spice recipe is easy to make at home from scratch with just four ingredients. While in Lebanon wild thyme is used, regular thyme from the supermarket or your garden makes a fine substitute. Za'atar refers both to the thyme plant itself, as well as this spice mix.

THE ORIGINAL DONAIR FROM THE EAST COAST OF CANADA
In the early 70's, a Greek restaurateur in the city of Halifax introduced the Donair. Within a few short years, virtually all pizzerias had added their version of the dish to their menus. Not to be confused with gyros, the Donair has a vastly different flavor. Originally the dish was made with ground lamb, but this proved too costly and ground beef was later substituted. Technically, this resulted in an aberration of sorts, as the final product was not what the originator had intended. What resulted, however, is the legendary East Coast Donair.

Steps:
- In a bowl, thoroughly mix together the ground beef, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, paprika, cayenne pepper, and oregano. Pack the spiced meat into a thick loaf shape, cover, and let rest in the refrigerator overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
- Place the meat loaf onto a baking sheet, and bake for 1 hour, flipping the loaf over halfway through cooking. Allow the meat loaf to cool so it holds together for slicing.
- Mix together the evaporated milk and white sugar in a bowl, stirring until the sugar is dissolved, and then add the vinegar by teaspoons, mixing together after each addition, to taste. Refrigerate the sauce until serving.
- Slice the meat loaf into 1/4-inch thick slices, and brown the slices in a skillet over medium heat until both sides are brown and crisp, about 5 minutes per side.
- Sprinkle the pita bread rounds with a little water, and press each onto a heated skillet to warm up.
- To serve, place several slices of meat into a warmed pita bread, and spoon about 2 tablespoons of sauce over the meat. Roll the pita bread into a cone shape, wrap in aluminum foil to keep the sauce from dripping out, and serve.

ZAAR'S DOWN!! OATMEAL CHIP COOKIES
After trying unsuccessfully to log on to Recipezaar this morning, I had to dust off one of my cookbooks to find a recipe for cookies. It has ages since I have made a recipe straight out of a cookbook; and I missed the expertise of or the suggestions of the many great chefs here. These cookies turned out well and seem to be slightly different than other recipes posted here. These cookies really spread out and are quite chewy.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 325F; butter a 10 X 15 inch cookie sheet or baking pan and line with parchment paper.
- Cream butter and sugar in large bowl until light and fluffy (about 5 minutes); beat in eggs, one at a time; beat in milk powder and vanilla; add flour, baking powder, cinnamon, coriander and mix just until combined; mix in oats, nuts, coconut, apricots and raisins (the dough will be very stiff and you may have to get into this 'hands on' - I did).
- Press dough evenly into prepared pan; bake until top is dark golden-brown, 35-40 minutes; cool in pan on rack for 15 minutes; turn out of pan and peel off parchment paper; cool completely and cut into bars using a sharp, straight-bladed knife; do not attempt to cut until completely cool - you'll just get a mess.

WHY-I-JOINED-ZAAR CARROT CAKE
On October 2, 2001, I discovered the Recipezaar Web site. I immediately joined so I could post a request for a recipe I had lost. In less than an hour, I had a reply: this recipe. Unfortunately, I never posted it into the database -- until now. My mistake. This cake was the reason I joined, and the friendly response I received was the reason I stayed!

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan.
- Mix flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and cinnamon; make a well in the center and add sugar, oil, eggs and vanilla. Mix with wooden spoon until smooth.
- Stir in carrots, coconut, walnuts and pineapple. Pour into 9x13 inch pan and bake for about 45 minutes. Don't panic, the centre will sink a little.
- Allow to cool; when cool, ice the cake. You can certainly use your favourite cream cheese frosting to ice this cake, but the one I've included is highly recommended (I usually leave the cake in the 13x9 pan and just ice the top).
- To make the frosting: Cream the butter and cream cheese until smooth; add the icing sugar and beat until creamy.

- To Make Filling: Combine 2 1/2 tablespoons flour and 1/2 cup milk and cook until it turns to thick paste. Cool completely.
- Cream together the 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup shortening, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Add cooled paste and beat until fluffy. (This will take awhile and if your paste is not completely cooled it will look curdled. ) I usually double this recipe for the filling.
