TRADITIONAL EAST FRISIAN NEW YEAR'S CAKES (CONES) - OSTFRIESISCH
This is a traditinal recipe, that apparently the women in former times could not do without on new years day. My father told me, that after the war, the 3 waffle makers in the village were handed around, so that every women could offer these cakes with a nice cup of east frisian tea (prepared with cream and demerara sugar) to their new years wellwishers. They taste a little like ice cream cones and should be prepared ahead so the spices can work their magic.Store in an airtight container. They make a nice xmas give away. You need a flat waffle iron.

Steps:
- Dissolve the sugar in the water and mix with all remaining ingredients.
- Leave to stand, preferably overnight.
- Heat a flat waffle iron (not those you would use for making Belgian waffles), spread a spoonful of the mixture evenly on the bottom part and cover.
- Lift the top several times until desired colouring.
- Roll immediately into cones, since they will harden as they cool.
- Proceed in the same manner with the rest of the dough.
- Carefully place the cold cones in an airtight container until use.

VASELOPITA - GREEK NEW YEARS CAKE
Traditional Greek New Years Day bread. Served as a coffee cake for breakfast. Also the person who receives the quarter inside gets good luck for 1 year!

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Generously grease a 10 inch round cake pan.
- In a medium bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light. Stir in the flour and mix until the mixture is mealy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Combine the baking powder and milk, add to the egg mixture, mix well. Then combine the lemon juice and baking soda, stir into the batter. Pour into the prepared cake pan.
- Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove and sprinkle the nuts and sugar over the cake, then return it to the oven for 20 to 30 additional minutes, until cake springs back to the touch. Gently cut a small hole in the cake and place a quarter in the hole. Try to cover the hole with sugar. Cool cake on a rack for 10 minutes before inverting onto a plate.
- Serve cake warm. Each person in the family gets a slice starting with the youngest. The person who gets the quarter in their piece, gets good luck for the whole year!
