Vegetarian Fish Sauce Substitute image

This alternative to store-bought vegetarian fish sauce will keep up to one week in the refrigerator. From Vegetarian Times.

5 tablespoons water, microwaved until very hot (just a few seconds will do it)
1/4 cup turbinado sugar
1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
3 tablespoons unseasoned rice vinegar
2 teaspoons lime juice
4 garlic cloves, minced (about 4 teaspoons)
2 teaspoons finely chopped red thai bird chiles

Steps:

  • In a small bowl stir the sugar into the 5 tablespoons hot water.
  • Cool; stir in remaining ingredients.

  • Use whenever fish sauce is called for. Mixture will keep up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.
