SIMPLY DELICIOUS UNSTUFFED CABBAGE SKILLET



Simply Delicious Unstuffed Cabbage Skillet image

This is a wonderful, easy and delicious one skillet meal. I like to serve the cabbage and beef mixture over the rice, but you could also mix the rice in while simmering the dish, if you prefer.

1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
1 cup sweet onion, chopped
1 cup green pepper, chopped
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
5 cups green cabbage, chopped
28 ounces stewed tomatoes, undrained
1/4 cup tomato paste
3/4 cup water
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 tablespoon seasoning salt
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
2 cups instant brown rice, cooked

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, brown ground beef with the onions, peppers and garlic until beef is no longer pink and vegetables are tender; drain, if necessary.
  • Add remaining ingredients, except for rice; stir well and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer covered for 20 to 30 minutes, until cabbage is tender.
  • Serve over prepared rice.

4 slices bacon
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup vinegar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
4 cups shredded cabbage

Steps:

  • Cook bacon in large skillet until crisp; remove bacon, reserving drippings in skillet.
  • Crumble bacon, set aside.
  • Add onions and next 4 ingredients to drippings in skillet, stirring until blended.
  • Stir in cabbage.
  • Cook over medium heat, uncovered, 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Sprinkle with reserved bacon.

2-4 cups shredded cabbage or cole slaw mix
1/2 of an onion
1 pound of your favorite ground burger (beef, turkey etc.)
1 or 2 carrots if not using coleslaw mix
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Wash cabbage, core and cut in fine stripes, skip this step if using cole slaw mix Brown ground beef and fry until cooked through. Dice onions and add to ground burger while cooking. Add cabbage (or cole slaw mix), bay leaf if desired, carrots and some more seasoning. Let simmer until cabbage is cooked, remove bay leaf. Season again if necessary. Serve with crusty rolls, rye bread, rice or potatoes.

1 small cabbage, finely shredded ( 6 cups )
1 large onion,finely chopped
1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
1 medium red bell pepper, finely chopped
3/4 c sugar
1 c white vinegar
1 c vegetable oil
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp celery seeds

Steps:

  • 1. Combine the first 4 ingredients; add 3/4 cup of sugar, and toss well.
  • 2. Combine vinegar and remaining 5 ingredients in a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Boil 1 minute. Pour hot dressing over cabbage mixture; toss well.
  • 3. Cover and chill at least 8 hours, tossing occasionally. Serve with a slotted spoon. 6-8 servings
