1 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons onion salt
1 quart vegetable oil for frying
4 large onions, peeled and sliced into rings

Steps:

  • Whisk together eggs, milk, flour, baking powder, and onion salt in a bowl to make a smooth batter.
  • Heat the oil in a large saucepan or deep fryer until a thermometer reads 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Dip the onion rings evenly into the batter, then fry in the oil for 2 to 3 minutes, working in batches if necessary, until the onion rings are golden brown. With a slotted spoon, remove the onion rings to paper towels to drain. Serve hot.

1 pound sweet onions
3 egg whites
1 cup dry bread crumbs
2 teaspoons dried thyme
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Cut onions into 1/2-in. slices; separate into rings and place in a bowl. Cover with ice water; soak for 30 minutes. Drain., In a small bowl, beat egg whites until foamy. In another bowl, combine the bread crumbs, thyme, salt, paprika and pepper. Divide the crumb mixture among three large resealable plastic bags. Dip a third of the onions in the egg whites; add a few rings at a time to crumb mixture and shake to coat. Place on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray., Repeat with remaining onions and crumb mixture. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes or until lightly browned and crisp.

100 g flour
2 teaspoons cajun seasoning
2 eggs
1 tablespoon oil
150 ml milk
2 onions
oil
ketchup

Steps:

  • Sift the flour, Cajun seasoning, and a pinch of salt into a large bowl. Make a well in the centre and add the yolks and oil. Slowly whisk in the milk to make a smooth batter. Chill in the fridge, covered, for 20 minutes.
  • Slice the onions into rings about 1.5cm in diameter. Separate the rings and set aside.
  • Heat the oil in a deep fat fryer to 180c, or you can use a large saucepan and fill it 1/3 with oil. Heat until a small piece of bread dropped in the oil turns golden brown in 60 seconds.
  • Whisk the egg white until forms stiff peaks and then gently fold it into the batter.
  • Dip the rings into the batter, a few at a time to coat them completely, then carefully fry in the oil in batches, for 3-4 minutes each, turning them over halfway through, until golden brown. It's important to only cook a few at a time, because if you overcrowd the pan, they won't cook properly.
  • Lift out with a slotted spoon and transfer to a plate topped with three sheets of kitchen paper - this will soak up any excess fat. Keep warm while you continue to cook the rest of the rings in the same way. Serve with tomato ketchup.

2 medium Vidalia onions
2 cups buttermilk
1/4 teaspoon hot sauce
1 egg, beaten
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cornmeal
2 teaspoons seasoned salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
Salt

Steps:

  • Preheat vegetable oil in a deep-fryer to 375 degrees F.
  • Slice the onions into 3/4-inch rings and separate. Add the buttermilk, hot sauce, and egg to a large casserole dish and whisk to combine. Stir in the onion slices and allow to soak for 3 to 5 minutes. Put the flour and cornmeal in a large brown paper bag and season with the season salt and cayenne. Add the onion rings, to the paper bag in batches, and shake until they are covered with the flour mixture. Make sure to get rid of the excess buttermilk before adding to the bag.
  • Add the onions in batches to the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the fryer. Fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a serving platter and season with salt when they come out of the hot oil.

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with seasoning salt, and serve.

1 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs, or panko bread crumbs (50 g)
½ cup grated parmesan cheese
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
3 large eggs, beaten
1 cup all-purpose flour
dipping sauce, of your choice, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425˚F (220˚C). Grease a baking sheet with nonstick spray or line with parchment paper.
  • Cut the onion crosswise into ½-inch (1 cm) slices and gently push apart each layer to get individual rings. Set aside.

  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep-fryer or pot to 365 degrees. Onion slices should be about 1/4 inch thick. Separate the onion slices into rings and set aside.
