This is a tasty recipe that I got from my mom. As a child, I used to eat it on hot buttered toast. It's so easy to make, and it tastes great!

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 cups apple cider
4 pounds cooking apples - peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
2 cups white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar

Steps:

  • In a 5 quart saucepan, bring apple cider and apples to a boil. Reduce heat. Cover and, stirring often, simmer 10 minutes, or until the apples are very tender.n
  • Sieve the mixture through a strainer or food mill, then return to simmer in the saucepan.n
  • Stir sugar and brown sugar into the mixture. Simmer uncovered 2 hours, stirring often, until the mixture reaches a spreadable consistency.n
  • Transfer to sterile containers and refrigerate or freeze until serving.n

Homemade Apple Butter image

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 1/2 pounds mixed apples, peeled, cored and chopped into 3/4-inch pieces
2 cups apple cider, preferably unfiltered
3/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Combine the apples, cider, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, allspice, ginger, cloves and salt in a Dutch oven or large, heavy pot and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer, partially covered, until the apples are very tender, about 25 minutes. Turn off the heat and puree using an immersion blender or in batches in a regular blender (be careful when blending hot liquids).
  • Transfer the pot to the oven. Bake, uncovered, stirring every 20 minutes so that the bottom does not burn, until the mixture is very thick and a rich brown caramel color, about 3 hours. Cool completely.

12 medium Granny Smith or other cooking apples, peeled and cut into fourths
1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1/2 cup apple juice
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients in 5- to 6-quart slow cooker.
  • Cover and cook on low heat setting 8 to 10 hours or until apples are very tender.
  • Mash apples with potato masher or large fork.
  • Cook uncovered on low heat setting 1 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until mixture is very thick. Cool about 2 hours.
  • Spoon apple butter into container. Cover and store in refrigerator up to 3 weeks.

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 pounds (1 kg) McIntosh apples, peeled and cored (6 large apples)
2 pounds (1 kg) Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored (4 large apples)
1 cup (250 mL) apple cider
2 cups (500 mL) granulated sugar
2 tablespoons (25 mL) lemon juice

Steps:

  • 1. Cut McIntosh apples into 1-inch (2.5 cm) pieces. Cut Granny Smith apples into smaller dice.
  • 2. Combine apples and cider in a very large stainless steel or enamel saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and boil gently for 20 minutes or until mixture is reduced by half.
  • 3. Stir in sugar and lemon juice. Return to a boil, reduce heat, and boil gently for about 25 minutes or until mixture is very thick. There should still be some tender apple chunks remaining. Remove from heat.
  • 4. Ladle into sterilized jars and process as directed for Shorter Time Processing Procedure .
  • Variation: Spiced Apple Butter
  • Add 2 tsp (10 mL) ground cinnamon and 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each ground cloves and allspice with the sugar.

6 pounds tart apples, cored and sliced
6 cups apple cider
3 cups white sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves

Steps:

  • Place the apples in a Dutch oven. Pour in the cider. Bring to a boil and cook on medium heat 30 minutes, or until soft.
  • Press the softened mixture through a food mill. Continue cooking at a medium boil for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Mix in the sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Continue cooking over low heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring frequently. Cook until the desired thickness has been attained. Refrigerate the finished apple butter in sterile containers.

10 cups apples (peeled, cored & chunked)
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2-3/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Steps:

  • Place apples in crock pot; cook on high for 4-1/2 hours (covered).
  • After 4-1/2 hours stir and add remaining ingredients. Cook for another 4-1/2 hours with NO lid.
  • Stir and seal in jars.
  • *Can seal in hot water bath or top with paraffin.
