Steps:

  • In 1-quart saucepan, heat 1 1/2 cups of the broth to boiling. Reduce heat to medium.
  • In small bowl, stir remaining 1/2 cup broth, the flour, salt and pepper with whisk until smooth. Gradually stir mixture into hot broth. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.

This is a great way to use up old chicken, pork, or beef bones (or just go buy some fresh!) that adds tons of amazing nutrients and amino acids to your diet! 10 minutes of prep, a day of your house smelling like a roast, and you have a fantastic, versatile base for soups, stews, and so much more!

cooking spray
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
2 pounds beef bones
6 cups cool water, or as needed
2 onions, thickly sliced
2 carrots
3 cloves garlic, crushed
2 bay leaves

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Spray a roasting pan with cooking spray.
  • Spread tomato paste onto beef bones and place in the prepared roasting pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until bones begin to brown, about 30 minutes.
  • Transfer bones to a slow cooker and pour in enough water to cover bones. Add onions, carrots, garlic, and bay leaves to broth mixture.
  • Cook on Low for at least 24 hours.
  • Strain broth through a fine-mesh strainer into a container and refrigerate.

  • 1. Melt butter in your sauce pan, then add the flour. Whisk the flour for about 1 minute until the flour is "cooked".
  • 2. Slowly add the beef broth and stir often for about 8-10 minutes. *Stirring is the key to lump less gravy.

Steps:

  • Throw all excess portions of chicken, pork, beef etc. into a large pot - this includes skin, fat, bones - everything!
  • Fill the pot with water to the top & add in 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • Bring to a boil and turn down to medium or a soft boil. Place the lid of the pot on and let simmer for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • Let cool. Strain so there is nothing left but the liquid. Portion out and freeze for a great yet simple gravy to place on top of your dry cat food.

1 pint bone broth OR juices from the pan
1 tsp dried thyme
Sea salt/pepper to taste (I don't season my bone broth so I pretty heavily season the salt here)

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a sauce pan, add the flour, and stir with a whisk to combine.
  • Add the bone broth and thyme and bring to a simmer stirring with your whisk occasionally until it thickens.
  • Season salt and pepper to taste and serve. This will refrigerate and reheat stovetop well (up to 4 days in advance), or you can freeze it for months.
