How to Make Turmeric Golden Milk image

A kosher recipe for Turmeric Golden Milk, made with turmeric, ginger, spices, and either cow's milk or non-dairy milk alternatives.

1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 inch piece fresh turmeric, peeled and finely grated or minced (about 1 1/2 teaspoons)
1 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled, and finely grated or minced (about 1 teaspoon)
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, plus extra for garnish
3 to 4 whole black peppercorns
Pinch cardamom (optional)
1 to 2 teaspoons raw honey, or more to taste, (optional)

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • In a small saucepan, combine the milk (or non-dairy milk alternative ), turmeric, ginger, vanilla, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, peppercorns, and cardamom (if using). Set over medium-high heat and bring just to boiling. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer gently for 10 minutes, or until the milk is a golden color and has a lightly spiced flavor.
  • Remove from the heat and pour the golden milk through a fine mesh strainer into 2 mugs. Sweeten to taste with honey and dust with cinnamon if desired. Serve hot.

1 cup of organic cow's or plant-based milk (coconut milk, almond milk, ...)
1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
1/2 tsp. teaspoon raw cacao powder
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. coconut oil (for better absorption of curcumin)
A pinch of freshly ground black pepper (for better absorption of curcumin)
1 to 1½ teaspoon raw honey added off the heat

Steps:

  • In a saucepan, heat the milk, spices, coconut oil, and vanilla extract (if using) over medium heat.
  • Simmer (do not boil) for about 10 minutes.
  • Off the heat, add the honey.
  • Allow to cool a bit before giving it to your kids.

  • Whether soaked or not, rinse the cashews until the water runs clear. In your blender, combine the cashews with 2 cups of the water. Add all of the remaining ingredients (turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, pepper, salt, honey and vanilla).
  • Start on a low setting and increase the speed until the cashews are blended into creamy oblivion. This could take 2 minutes in a high-powered blender or longer in a regular blender.
  • Blend in 2 cups more water until creamy. Taste, and if the mixture tastes too fiery, you can blend in a bit more sweetener (though the flavors seem to mellow a bit with time).
  • To serve cold, fill a drinking glass with ice and pour the golden milk on top. Or to serve warm, gently heat your desired quantity in a saucepan on the stove over medium-low heat until steaming, stirring often (don’t overdo it, or the texture won’t be as nice). Store leftover golden milk in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
