Witches' Brew (aka Hot Spiced Cider) image

I have been making this for years, for Halloween and all through the fall/winter. Its wonderful for holiday gatherings, and a nice change from eggnog. Its even great to take along in a thermos to those chilly football games! (Makes 30 5 fl.oz. servings)

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 gallon fresh sweet apple cider (the unfiltered, cloudy kind)
1 (750 ml) bottle brotherhood holiday wine (Brotherhood is the name of the winery or brand of this particular lightly spiced red wine.)
12 whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks (each about 3-4 inches long)

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a large pot (or"cauldron").
  • Simmer,stirring occasionally until very hot.
  • Serve in heatproof punch cups or mugs.
  • **Can also be made in a microwave,crockpot or electric coffee percolator (place spices in basket) instead of stovetop.
  • If there are leftover, it can be stored (tightly covered) in the refrigerator and then reheated later.
  • Remove cinnamon sticks and cloves before storing.

1 cup sugar
1 cup water
8 medium kiwifruit, peeled and quartered
1/2 cup fresh mint leaves
1 cup vodka, optional
1 liter ginger ale, chilled
Ice cubes

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil. Cook and stir until sugar is dissolved; set aside to cool., Place the kiwi, mint and sugar syrup in a blender; cover and process until blended. Pour into a large pitcher; stir in vodka if desired. Refrigerate until chilled., Just before serving, stir in ginger ale. Serve over ice.

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
5 whole cloves
3 tablespoons finely chopped peeled ginger
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup sugar
1 (25 1/4-ounce) bottle sparkling cider (about 3 1/4 cups), chilled
4 cups cranberry juice cocktail, chilled
1 (1-liter) bottle club soda or seltzer, chilled
1 cup dark rum (optional)
Ice blocks in any shape (see cooks' note, below)

Steps:

  • Bring cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger, water, and sugar to a boil in a small heavy saucepan, stirring until sugar has dissolved, then simmer, covered, 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep, uncovered, 1 hour.
  • Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, discarding solids, then chill until cold.
  • Combine all remaining ingredients, except ice, with syrup in a punch bowl. Add ice before serving.
