3 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 ½ tablespoons white sugar
1 ½ cups milk
2 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Steps:

  • Mix the cocoa powder and sugar together in a small saucepan. Stir the 1 1/2 cups milk into the saucepan until the sugar has dissolved. Place over low heat; slowly bring the mixture to a low simmer.
  • Whisk 2 tablespoons of milk together with the cornstarch in a small cup; slowly whisk the cornstarch slurry into the cocoa mixture. Continue cooking, whisking continually, until the hot chocolate reaches a pudding-like thickness, 2 to 3 minutes.

2 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons to 1 tablespoon cornstarch
2 cups milk
2 - 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 cup chopped chocolate or chocolate chips

Steps:

  • Melt butter in a medium saucepan over low heat.
  • Whisk in cornstarch until combined and melty. If you want the hot chocolate thicker, use the maximum amount of cornstarch.
  • Add in milk and sugar. Increase the heat gradually to medium-high. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Mixture will start to thicken.
  • Once the mixture begins to thicken, turn the heat down to low and add in the chocolate chips. Stir constantly until well melted.
  • Serve hot. Keep the leftovers because it is also amazing, if not better cold!

This easy to make Italian style creamy hot chocolate recipe is super thick, rich, and enriched with intense chocolate flavors. Ready in under 10 minutes.

For Italian Hot Chocolate:
3 1/2 cups (875 ml) milk (I use semi-skimmed milk) (you can also use water)
5 tablespoons sugar, or to taste
3 tablespoons (24 grams) unsweetened cocoa powder
240 grams (8 oz) dark chocolate (75%)
5 tablespoons cornstarch
2 pinches of salt
For Serving:
Whipped cream
Chocolate shavings
NOTE: Some ingredients can be replaced with their vegan counterparts.

Steps:

  • Chop the dark chocolate. Set it aside.
  • In a small bowl whisk together 1/2 cup of cold milk and cornstarch. Set it aside.
  • In a saucepan place cocoa, sugar, salt, and mix.
  • Also, add 3 cups of milk and whisk together.
  • Place the saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat. Heat the milk mixture, whisking occasionally, until the mixture is simmered and starts to bubble around the edges.
  • Once the milk is heated and reaches the scalding stage, turn the heat to low, and add the milk and cornstarch mixture.
  • Keep whisking continuously and cooking until the mixture has thickened and combined. This would take about 3-4 minutes.
  • After that, add the chocolate pieces and turn off the heat.
  • Whisk continuously for approximately 2-3 minutes or until completely dissolved and thick.
  • Pour hot chocolate into mugs, and garnish with some whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
  • Serve immediately.
