This traditional Hawaiian ahi tuna poke bowl is served as a raw tuna salad that is marinated then topped with a choice of fresh vegetables and fruit like avocado and mango.

450 grams fresh sushi grade ahi tuna (cut up into 1/2 inch cubes)
2 teaspoons sesame oil
1 /1/2 teaspoon rice vinegar
2 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1/4 cup scallions (thinly sliced)
1/2 teaspoon sambal oelek or sriracha sauce (optional for spicy version)
1 avocado (cut into cubes)
1 mango (cut into small pieces)
1 teaspoon sesame seeds (black or white)
2 cups rice white or brown (cooked)
1 cup Edamame beans cooked or (canned lima beans)

Steps:

  • In a medium size bowl, add the sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, scallions, and cubed ahi tuna and toss together. If you want your tuna poke spicy, add in the sambal oelek or sriracha sauce.
  • To assemble the salad bowl, add a scoop of rice then top with the marinated tuna followed by the avocado, mango, lima beans and sesame seeds.
  • Drizzle with some soy sauce or mayonnaise.
  • Serve and eat immediately.

1 1/2 pounds sushi grade ahi tuna, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1 avocado, scooped out of shell, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
2 mangos (mine were small), cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1 seedless cucumber (I used an english cucumber), cut into 1/2 inch cubes
3 green onions, chopped
3 tablespoons coconut aminos
1 tablespoons rice wine vinegar (or coconut vinegar)
1 tablespoon sriracha (I use this brand or make your own)
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1 garlic clove, grated
pinch of salt
1 tablespoon white sesame seeds
1 tablespoon black sesame seeds

Steps:

  • Place all ingredients in a large bowl and mix until completely combine. Cover and place in the fridge to chill for 10-15 minutes.
  • Fill avocado shells with ahi tuna poke then eat up!

With the motor running stream in water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency is achieved*. Taste and adjust for seasoning.
  • Prepare the Tuna Poke: In a medium bowl, combine the onion through the sesame oil. Season with a generous pinch of salt and whisk well to combine. Add the cubed tuna and toss gently to combine.
  • Assemble the salad: In a serving bowl, add the lettuce, seaweed salad, avocado and cucumber. Top with the tuna poke mixture and optional toppings . Drizzle with dressing. Enjoy!
