"Unlike many barbecue sauces, this recipe doesn't use ketchup, which typically contains sugar," says Debbie Purdue of Westland, Michigan. "The savory sauce, made with sugar-free maple-flavored syrup, gives unbelievable flavor to pork, chicken and spareribs. You won't miss the sugar at all.

2 cups water
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1 large onion, chopped
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon ground mustard
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup sugar-free maple-flavored syrup

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine the first 12 ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes or until the onion is tender. Stir in the syrup; cook until heated through. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. Stir before using.

2 cups tomato sauce (or one 14.5 oz can)
1 can (6 oz) of tomato paste
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup real maple syrup
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt (I use this salt.)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1-2 teaspoons liquid smoke (optional, but nice if you're wanting the smokey flavor)
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional- use only if you want a kick)

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan, and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  • Continue to mix and simmer for 10-15 minutes so all the ingredients can meld together.
  • Transfer to a jar and store in the refrigerator for up to several weeks. You can also freeze it for longer storage.

NORTH ATLANTIC-STYLE MAPLE BBQ SAUCE

3/4 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup light molasses
1/3 cup honey
1/4 cup malt vinegar
1/2 cup white vinegar
2 cups of ketchup
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoon soy sauce
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
6 drops of Tabasco sauce
3 teaspoons of fenugreek
6 Teaspoons sweet paprika
2 Tbs cornstarch
1/4 cup water

Steps:

  • Add liquid ingredients, except the water, to sauce pan. Simmer these ingredients for 15 minutes or until all ingredients have blended. Sift in fenugreek and paprika. Stir while spices are blending into sauce.
  • Bring sauce to slow rolling boil. Then add cornstarch and water to sauce. Continue to simmer until sauce has thickened.
  • Sauce is great on pork, beef, lamb, chicken or anything you desire. This sauce is also a great marinade when used with citrus juice base!!!

1 cup onion (finely chopped)
3/4 cup ​ maple syrup
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup brown sugar (firmly packed)
1/4 cup water
2 tablespoon garlic (finely chopped)
2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoon lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon salt
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon coriander

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Combine all sauce ingredients in a large saucepan. Bring to a simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes, uncovered, stirring often.
  • Once cooked through and thickened, remove from heat. Let sauce cool for 10 to 15 minutes before using.
  • If making a few days ahead of time, let mixture cool completely, about 30 minutes. Store in a container with lid in refrigerator for up to a month. Reheat in microwave for a minute or two before using on grilled meats.

1 tablespoon liquid smoke flavoring
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder

1 cup dark brown sugar
⅓ cup unsweetened applesauce
⅓ cup real maple syrup
¼ cup molasses
¼ cup bacon fat
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 tablespoon ground mustard
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ cup apple cider

Steps:

  • Stir ketchup, brown sugar, applesauce, maple syrup, molasses, bacon fat, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, allspice, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, and nutmeg together in a large saucepan over medium heat until thoroughly combined. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for at least 1 hour, adding apple cider if a thinner consistency is desired.
  • Remove from the heat and let cool slightly, about 15 minutes.

1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Purée all ingredients in a blender until smooth, then simmer in a small heavy saucepan, stirring occasionally, until reduced to about 3/4 cup, 8 to 10 minutes. Cool to room temperature. Serve with shrimp or chicken.
