Ingredients

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1 3/4 cups milk chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Steps:

Preheat oven to 375°.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl.
Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy.
Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Gradually beat in flour mixture.
Stir in morsels and nuts.
Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.
Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown.
Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

My grandmother made these in her woodstove oven and I have always guessed at the cooking temperature and cooking times. As is usual with lots of older recipes no exact amount of flour was listed either.

Ingredients

1 egg
1 cup white sugar
½ cup shortening
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
⅓ cup granulated sugar for decoration
¾ cup sweetened condensed milk

Steps:

Mix all ingredients, except flour. Add enough flour to make a rollable dough, about 2 cups.
Roll out to approximately 1/2 inch thick. Cut with round biscuit cutter and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree F (175 degree C) oven for 8 - 10 minutes.
