Provided by Eb Gargano

Categories     Nibbles     Party Food     Snacks

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 7

Oil for greasing (or greaseproof paper)
Plain flour for dusting your worksurface
320 g pack ready rolled puff pastry (see note)
75 g mature cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (optional)
8 rashers (strips) streaky bacon
1 egg (beaten)

Steps:

  • Lightly grease a large baking tray with a little oil or line with greaseproof paper.
  • Lay out the ready rolled pastry on a floured surface, sprinkle the cheese all over the pastry and fold in half.
  • Roll out the pastry to roughly 25 x 40cm (10 x 16 inches). It should be wide enough to place 8 rashers of bacon side-by-side and just a little longer than 1 rasher of bacon in the other direction (see picture above).
  • Spread the pastry with the mustard and then lay out the bacon so the bacon is just touching but not overlapping.
  • Cut down between the bacon, so you have 8 strips, then twist each strip several times and place on the prepared baking tray.
  • Chill the twists for a minimum of 20 minutes in the fridge.
  • Just before you plan on cooking the cheese straws, heat your oven to 220C / 200C / gas mark 7 / 425F.
  • Remove the cheese straws from the fridge and brush with the beaten egg.
  • Cook for 25-30 minutes, or until golden on top and cooked all the way through.
  • Eat as soon as they are cool enough to hold.
  • Store any uneaten cheese straws in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat for 10 minutes at 220C / 200C / gas mark 7 / 425F or until piping hot all the way through.

LORRAINE'S BACON-CHEDDAR STRAWS

Lorraine's Bacon-Cheddar Straws image

Provided by Lorraine Pascale

Categories     appetizer

Time 1h10m

Yield 14 cheese straws

Number Of Ingredients 6

All-purpose flour, for dusting work surface
One 13-ounce package puff pastry
1 tablespoon prepared English mustard
14 strips good-quality streaky bacon
3 ounces mature Cheddar, grated
1 free-range egg, lightly beaten

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • On a lightly floured work surface, roll the puff pastry into a large rectangle, 1/4-inch-thick.
  • Rotate the pastry so that the longer side is facing you. Spread the mustard evenly over the pastry. Lay the bacon slices on the pastry, long side facing you, leaving a small gap in between each slice. Trim any messy edges that spill over the puff pastry, to neaten the rectangle into a straighter edge. Sprinkle the Cheddar over the bacon. Cut in between each slice to form individual pastry-bacon strips.
  • Carefully twist each strip 4 or 5 times, so it looks like a curly straw. Place on the prepared baking sheet and brush with beaten egg. Chill in the fridge for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Remove the twists from the fridge and brush a second time with beaten egg. Bake until the pastry is well risen and golden-brown, 15 to 20 minutes. Set aside to cool.

SWEET AND SAVORY CHEESY BACON WRAPPED PUFF PASTRY TWISTS

Sweet and Savory Cheesy Bacon Wrapped Puff Pastry Twists image

The holiday appetizer everyone asks for...year after year...quick, easy, and delicious!

Provided by Tieghan Gerard

Time 1h

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 cup light or dark brown sugar
1-2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary, using to your taste
kosher salt and black pepper.
2 sheets (1 box) frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 egg, beaten
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese ((or a mix of your favorite cheeses))
1-2 teaspoons cayenne pepper ((optional))
24 strips thin cut bacon, or 12 sticks of thicker bacon, halved

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 375° F. Line 2 baking sheets with foil and place a wire rack on top. Lightly rub each rack with olive oil. 2. In a shallow bowl, combine the brown sugar, rosemary, and a pinch each of salt and pepper. 3. Place both sheets of pastry on a lightly floured counter. Brush the surface of each with a beaten egg. Evenly sprinkle about 1/2 cup of cheese over each sheet, then sprinkle with cayenne. Dust a rolling pin lightly with flour and roll the rolling pin over the cheese, gently pressing the cheese into the pastry. Fold the pastry in half, then cut each into 12 (1/2 inch) wide strips. Pinch the ends to seal, then gently twist each strip several times to enclose the cheese. It's ok if some of the cheese falls out. 4. Take a piece of bacon and wrap it around the twisted pastry. Repeat with the remaining twists. Dredge the twist through the brown sugar mix, tossing to coat, placing the twist on the prepared baking sheet as you go. 5. Bake 30 to 50 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through. My bacon took 50 minutes to cook, start checking the twists at around 30 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature...though I love them warm!

LOW CARB CHEESE STRAWS WITH BACON

Low Carb Cheese Straws with Bacon image

These low carb cheese straws are extra delicious due to the addition of bacon! Keto, LCHF, and gluten free recipe.

Provided by Georgina from StepAwayFromTheCarbs.com

Categories     Low Carb Party Food

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 7

1½ cups shredded mozzarella
2 tbs cream cheese
1 cup almond flour
1 egg, beaten
salt and pepper
8 slices cooked bacon
2 tbs melted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400F.
  • Place the mozzarella and cream cheese in a medium size microwaveable bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, stir and then another cook for another 30 seconds.
  • Stir in the beaten egg and almond flour, and season with salt and pepper.
  • Let the dough cool slightly, then knead until smooth. Add a little extra almond flour if the dough is too sticky, then knead again.
  • Place the dough on a large silicone mat. You need to roll it into a flat rectangle (use a rolling pin and parchment paper or just use your hands)
  • Place the bacon side-by-side on the dough. Use a palette knife (or something similar) to score lines between the bacon.
  • Pick up each strip of dough and bacon, and twist them around into the classic cheese straw shape, and place them on a baking sheet lined with (another) silicone mat.
  • Brush the low carb cheese straws with a little melted butter, then bake in for 15 minutes, turning half way through the cooking time.
  • Let cool for five minutes, (you might like to place them on a piece of paper towel if they look too greasy - it depends on your bacon!), then serve warm, garnished with fresh parsley.

HERBED CHEESY PUFF PASTRY BACON STRAWS

Herbed Cheesy Puff Pastry Bacon Straws image

These cheese straws are probably worth ruining your appetite for.

Provided by Katie Workman

Categories     Appetizer

Time 40m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 large egg
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon finely minced sage (or ½ teaspoon finely minced rosemary)
½ cup finely Parmesan or Grana Padana cheese (divided)
12 pieces sliced bacon (not thick sliced)
1/2 package frozen or refrigerated puff pastry (defrosted if necessary)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  • In a small bowl combine the egg with the mustard and sage or rosemary and season with salt and pepper.
  • Unroll the puff pastry onto a rimmed baking sheet. Brush the egg mixture over the puff pastry all the way to the edges. Evenly dust half of the cheese over half of the puff pastry, on one side of the rectangle. Use the parchment to fold the side of the puff pastry without the cheese over the cheese dusted side so that the cheese is now inside the folded puff pastry, then peel off the top of the parchment and let it lay back on the baking sheet. Gently pinch the edges and press down lightly on the pastry to make it adhere to the cheese inside.
  • Slice the puff pastry into 12 strips. Brush the top of the strips with the remaining egg wash and sprinkle over the remaining cheese. Gently press down so the cheese adheres.
  • Place a piece of bacon on a flat surface, then place one of the strips on top of the bacon, allowing it to stretch very gently so that it is the same length as the piece of bacon. Twist the dough and bacon about 4 times to create a spiral, and place them onto the parchment on the baking sheet, leaving at least 1/2-inch between each straw.
  • Bake for 25 to 35 minutes, until the bacon is crisped and the puff pastry is golden brown and cooked through. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Provided by Trisha Yearwood

Categories     appetizer

Time 55m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/4 cup maple syrup
2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
1/2 orange, juiced
1 pound regular uncured bacon (not thick cut)
1/4 cup finely shredded Cheddar

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and fit a baking sheet with a wire rack.
  • In a small saucepot, mix the maple syrup, red pepper flakes, orange juice and 1/4 cup water. Bring to a boil, then remove from the heat.
  • Line up the bacon slices on the wire rack and brush with the hot maple syrup mixture. Sprinkle some cheese on each piece of bacon. With a skewer in hand, fold the end of a piece of bacon in half lengthwise and press the skewer through the end. Do this to 4 pieces of bacon, spreading them out evenly across the skewer, and place the skewer on the baking sheet. Twist the bacon pieces into long spirals so as to create straws. Take another skewer and skewer the bottom of each piece of bacon to keep the bacon twisted. Do this to all the bacon.
  • Bake until the bacon browns, about 35 minutes. Let cool slightly on the rack; the bacon will get crunchy as it sits. Serve immediately.

  • On a clean surface, sprinkle ¼ cup of the Parmesan cheese evenly in a square. Place 1 sheet of puff pastry on top, then sprinkle another ¼ cup cheese over it. Use a rolling pin to roll the sheets slightly (from about ¼-inch thick to about ?-inch thick).
  • Using a pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into long, thin strips about ½-inch wide. (The length will vary depending on the brand of puff pastry. Just make sure the strips aren't longer than your baking sheets.)
  • Place a piece of bacon on top of a strip of dough and press lightly. Grab the dough at both ends and twist it. Place the twist onto a prepared baking sheet, and lightly press the ends onto the parchment paper so that they stick and hold the twist in place. Repeat this entire step with the remaining dough strips from the first sheet of puff pastry, then sprinkle ¼ cup Parmesan cheese evenly over the finished twists.
