This fragrant twist on the gimlet cocktail gets its clean green notes not from lime juice but from fresh basil. For extra glamour and aroma, tuck small sprigs of additional basil into each glass.

1 cup basil lemon syrup
3/4 cup vodka
3/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1 cup ice cubes
Garnish: fresh basil sprigs (preferably lemon basil); lemon zest strips

Steps:

  • Stir together all ingredients in a pitcher until cold, then strain into 8- to 10-ounce glasses (such as Old Fashioned) half filled with ice.

1 1/2 ounces gin, such as 209 Gin

Steps:

  • Place 6 of the basil leaves in the palm of your hand and clap. Place the leaves in the base of a cocktail shaker and add the simple syrup and lime juice. Pummel the basil leaves with a muddler to release the oils. Add the gin to the shaker along with ice. Put the top on the cocktail shaker and shake. Using a strainer, pour the mixture into a glass.
  • Place the remaining basil leaf in your hand and clap. Garnish the cocktail with the basil leaf and serve.

4 tablespoons simple syrup
10 ounces vodka
1 lemon, juice of
8 ice cubes

Steps:

  • In a cocktail shaker, muddle 8 of the basil leaves with 2 tbls of the simple syrup (simple syrup is equal parts of water and sugar, heated until sugar disolves then chilled).
  • Add 5 oz of the vodka, half of the lemon juice and 4 ice cubes and shake well.
  • Strain into 2 martini glasses and repeat with the remaining ingredients.

1 cup water
½ cup fresh blueberry, crushed
8 fresh basil leaves, torn
ice, for shaking
1 oz strained lime juice
2 oz vodka
fresh basil leaf, for garnish
fresh blueberry, for garnish

Steps:

  • Make the blueberry basil simple syrup: In a small pot over medium heat, combine the sugar and water. Add the blueberries and basil. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved and the syrup is clear. Let cool completely, about 30 minutes. Strain before using. The syrup will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
  • Make the cocktail: In a cocktail shaker, combine the lime juice, 1 ounce blueberry basil simple syrup, and the vodka. FIll the shaker with ice, then shake vigorously. Strain the cocktail into a chilled martini glass and garnish a basil leaf and blueberries.
  • Enjoy!

  • Add the simple syrup and vodka and fill with ice cubes to the surface of the liquid. Shake vigorously until the shaker is freezing your hands, perhaps 15 seconds or so. My feeling is you can’t serve a gimlet that’s too cold and besides a good shake is part of the presentation. Show some passion!
  • Strain into a martini glass, and garnish with a basil leaf. If you have a tiny clothespin (here’s a link) use that to fasten the basil leaf to the glass. If not, you could hang a lime wheel over the side and use a toothpick to attach the basil leaf to the lime.
